Has anyone been to ixtapa mexico im looking to go in mid july any good waves around the area is the area safe, any good places to stay, keep in mind i have my wife with me so no camping or huts. or is there a beeter choice in mexico to go with better wave potential. thanks guys.
I just passed on a freebie trip to Zihuatenejo, sister city almost adjoining Ixtapa.
Seems you gotta taxi ride out of town 7 miles, costing about $15 American each day, for any kind of rideable surf.
Both towns have a local beachbreak, but it’s all closeout small boogie and body stuff.
I’d rather go to SanBlas or SantaCruz, where the surf is right there easily walking distance.
Hello Josh- I have been to that area and I have friends that go there regularly. You should check out the village of troncones. Lots of beach rentals owned by expat californians that cater to surfers. Prices are generally quite reasonable. Manzanillo Inn( I thhink that’s correct) is the nicest. Nice rooms(as in airconditioning) pool, board rentals,Etc. It also is right in front of manzinillo bay which is not the premier wave in the area but is great for a close evening surf before dinner.
If you search troncones you will find lots of very nice rentals for less but they tend to not have A/C.
The area is not unknown, crowds can be light to kind of jammed depending on how many people travel there at a given time. But the vibe is generally pretty mellow.
Best kown waves are Saladitas, a looong mellow left point that is probably one of the best longboard waves I have ridden. Unfortunately I hear that it has become infected with Surfschool disease. The other main wave is the ranch, a left reef break that ranges from smaller performance wave to double overhead line-up clearing bombs when the swell is really cranking. Lots of surf all over if you don’t mind exploring a bit.
Your wife will like the nearly empty beach at Troncones which is also quite safe. Zihuatennao(sp?) has an excellent crafts market with good prices. Be prepared to bargain, of course. They also have the usual eco-adventure stuff to do.
Word of warning -Mex is hotter than a mofo during the summer and it is listed as a malaria zone although I did not hear of any incidents or concern from the locals.
Aloha- John
