Hey John, glad to see some actual experience with the shape show up here.
Its always hard on these forums to know exactly whats being directed to who, so how to respond becomes confusing at times. I don't know if I'm in the 'pricks and faggots who should fark off' category of the o.p., or the 'tough guys who gang up on underdogs' category of yours. You ask if any of us have ridden one, and I clearly stated that I have never seen one in person, so I guess you're not referring to me?
I honestly never noticed anyone 'ganging up' on anyone, but I concede its all in how you take it. The o.p. asked what makes them so special. To me, as an observer of surfboard designs, I would say the plan shape. While the rocker or fin layout may be somewhat unconventional, I don't think anyone would say "those Meyerhoffers are so special because of their rocker and fin layout".
I also noted a similar shape was covered in the recent issue of Surfer magazine, with photos of the board being surfed, and a ride report. A legit shape. So I don't think anything I said would indicate that the Meyerhoffer's shape was "bugging" me, only that the peanut shape was the most outstandingly "special" aspect of the design. If I'm not mistaken, that's the aspect that advertising for the board focuses on as well, something along the lines of - paddles and trims like a longboard, turns like a shortboard, because of the unusual plan shape.
I posted a pic of a broken board in response to a comment that was made about a 9'3" Meyerhoffer - the board in the photo was 9'2", so I thought there was some confusion, and posted the pic to ask if that was indeed the one being referred to. Yeah, a few jokes were made, but thats pretty par for the course on a public forum, and I don't interpret anything sinister behind it. More like good natured banter, to me.
So, it was a "cheap shot" - meaning that the ebay lister who posted that picture shouldn't have done it? If so, calling it a cheap shot here does little good, since I don't think the ebay poster is part of this forum. Or was it a cheap shot to mention it? Or was it a cheap shot to post the picture to find out if that was the one being referred to? You say, "If everyone posted their broken board pictures, then the internet would be crowded with broken board pictures". OK. If everyone posted their vacation pictures, then the internet would be crowded with vacation pictures. Save bandwidth, don't post broken board pictures. Since I used the original picture's url to post the pic, am I conserving bandwidth? I really don't know how that works. If I deprived someone somewhere of bandwidth, I apologize. I will go back and delete the picture from my post.
At any rate, all comments, good, bad, funny or otherwise, only serve to keep the thread alive, and allow greater opportunity for the subject to be discussed, and any reviews from those who have them or have ridden them to be shared. If the o.p. would tell us what he finds so special about them, then it would be easier to identify what makes them so special. Without knowing what exactly he considers to be special, how can we say what it is that makes them that way?
I think that a lot of the reactions resulted from the o.p.'s 'fark off you pricks and faggots' comment, not from a desire to attack an underdog with an unconventionally shaped board. This is swaylocks - home of the unconventional board builders. Like you, I invite the o.p. to tell us more about the intent of his original question. If you or anyone would care to elaborate on how the fin layout affects performance, or how the unconventional tail rocker affects performance, I'm all ears. That kind of stuff is what I come here for.
BTW, the Meyerhoffers have been discussed here before. Yeah, there are mixed reactions to it. Same as with fish, quads, twinzers, funboards, hws, SUP's, bonzers, lazer zaps, etc. Seems to go with the territory when discussing surfboard designs.
And finally, Sounds like you are back in the surf - good news after all the grief you've been through with your heart condition, glad to hear it. I think I speak for everyone here when I say its better to be out there on a Meyerhoffer than not be out there at all, and if the design works for you (or the o.p., or anyone else), then it works. I would never go on record as being against any shape that a guy is stoked on, just because its unconventional. If I had a Meyerhoffer, I would not hesitate to paddle out and give 'er a go!
