I picked up a nice Junod board at a yard sale this weekend. It totally saved the whole weekend. I came out of my apartment Sunday morning and saw my car had been hit and dented. It had a huge dent and no note. I felt like murdering someone. I got in my car, now the rolling cr@p mobile, and started driving to the hardware store to pick up a power planer. I’m cruising down sepulveda blvd and see twenty or so boards lined up along a fence. A quick u-turn and my weekend was saved. Better yet, when I was walking around the hardware store I had this thing under my arm. Can’t leave my new friend in the back of the cr@p mobile to get ripped off obviously. All the old guys were stoked and making little comments about how cool and old school the board was.
Michel is from Santa Monica originally, looks to be mid to later 70’s, any of his old pals, Barry Gordon, Steve Haight, Andy Salazar, Craig Stecyk, might shed some light on it
there’s a little spot off sepulveda deep in Torrance (where it’s no longer also PCH) where a couple guys seem to have an ongoing yardsale with about 20 boards all lined up in front of their house.
Don't know all the details; but he moved around a bit before settling in Santa Cruz the first time. He was doing boards under the "West Cliff" lable mid '70's. I'm thinking this may have been before before West Cliff not after. Try callinng the Mel family at Freeline Design in Capitola. They may have Michels' # as they occaisonally have his boards in their shop. That's a clean example of some of his early work. The points on the swallow tails look like they have been busted off on far flung corral reefs, but otherwise very good.
Wow, quick responses! Thanks everyone! Afoaf - The sale was on Sepulveda directly under the 10 freeway. West LA area. The guys having the sale were consignment dudes and they said they had a whole warehouse full of surf boards and surf related stuff. At the yard sale there was also some early skateboards from the dogtown days and lots of fishing gear. I got their business card and will post up the contact info. Unfortunately I left the business card in my truck, which is now getting fixed, so it’ll be a few days. Thanks for the email address steiny, I’ll try shooting off an email and I’ll post anything I find out. I also plan on dragging this board to the next Sacred Craft and see if I can talk to the man in person and let him get reacquainted with this great board.
