How many are using the replacment microplane? I just bought the 5 1/2 inch blade and found that this is GREAT! Way better than a regulat sureform blade. Clean cuts without any tearing. Just used it to take off the skin on the nose and it worked like a charm. Im still trying to figure out what else i can use it for. Does anybody else use this? What kind of things do you use it for?
I’ve both microplane blades and conventional blades in my sureforms, different sizes etc. The conventional blade is a brute gouging out all kinds of foam, a very rough tool. The micro plane however is an almost perfect tool, I figgure I can shape an entire board using only that one tool. I mow foam, I flatten the bottom, I true the outline, everything, no gouges very little finish sanding. But, it also is effective, it removes a fair amount of foam while keeping everyting smooth.
where did you get these and what do they cost?
Clark foam and fiberglass Hawaii. The small one is about 4 bucks and the big one is less than 10
thanks. I don’t use this tool much, but a better blade is always a good thing.
the old steel surform blades cut a lot deeper. Still, I use the 10 inch MP for almost all my surform needs. Have the shorter blade, but not mounted up yet. One thing I’ll say for sure: the MP blade is great on wood, I did a pair of nose blocks and a tail block yesterday, also used the finger plane after a spell on the carborundum stone. Dang it all I had some non-straight grain in one of the nose blocks. Humbug.
I’ve got a couple of microplanes and feel they are just too slow. the work is clean just takes too long to get there.
I have both the short and long blades. They are diffinetly smoother and remove less foam at a slower pace. So whats the rush? I also have a half round MP simular to what they use in the auto bodt shops. I had to make my own handle for it. I’ll post a picture sometime.
