Mid Atlantic/ North East sway brothers and sisters

Good to see people checking in, hope everyone and their families are OK. Hey Sak, good to see you and your family are safe. I met you at the Anything But Popouts event, was drooling over your sick quiver of Coils lol.

The photo’s are not unlike the photo’s of the North Shore, after the giant surf of Dec. 1969.    Houses, cars, and boats, all had a similar fate.

The difference here is the destruction is spread from Cape Hatteras all the way up to New York.  Thats over 600 miles of coastline.

And, the area is far more densely populated than the North Shore was in Dec. '69.

Artz, I’m in… PM me and I’ll help with supplies from Greenlight. Brian needs the business and maybe buying some supplies from him will help also.

Saddening what is going on and they talk about on the news is the election.  Be strong, and couragous, do the right thing and hopefully things get better.

I just got a chance to check things out online,I live in Brigantine ,N.J. I got electric for now and internet and most of all heat finally. No tv but thats ok. The south end of our island looks almost good . but the north end where I live got its ass kicked. No complaints My house is still standing with some battle scars and my workshop and tools and truck are wet toast .I have never seen the water come up that fast and that far in 57 years. Most people are trying to help each other out with what ever they can. My neighborhood is really good it looks out for each other both young and old.I hope all is well or getting better in the neighboring beach towns AC,LBI.OC and Margate and Ventnor. I was going to get a new planer anyway.

Day 9. Still without power in Manasquan…

Winter storm ‘Athena’ now dropping snow and rain on us. Expect prolonged power outages…

Hurricane Sandy Sale still happening for those who have the special coupon code.

Thanks to all for your support!

~Brian

Just got power back a few hours ago here in inland NJ (Westfield). Ten days w/o power but just a minor inconvenience compared to the folks on the barrier islands. It’s been snowing since noon and we’re expecting 3-5 inches tonight. To keep this board-building related…Finished a board for myself a few days before Sandy and I have been chomping at the bit to try it. I have no idea where it is even possible to surf, what the sandbars have done, what kind of crap is in the water, etc. At least the epoxy has had plenty of time to cure :).

Frustration setting in.  My house needs a lot of work thanks to this storm.  Still no signs of an insurance adjuster and good luck getting contractors to even come out for an estimate.

Just got an email from my adjuster this morning.  Email stated what to do until he can schedual a time to inspect the house.  It also stated what is not covered.  Funny how that comes up now.  I was told to take pictures,  remove rugs, furniture, cut the drywall etc.  The problem is the officials won’t let us onto the island to do the work.  Lavallette officials are trying their best, but I m sure more damage is being done as I write this.

That sucks Mako hang in there, can you get to your place? My place is on LBI and can’t get back, still not letting people on but I was there to secure it and take care of a few things before I got booted. It’s like martial law down there, National Guard just shut down and kicked people out of a church in beach haven that was feeding and sheltering people. The communication between the police/residents/townships is a total cluster f*ck, no one has any idea whats going on. A lot of families don’t even have access their houses yet and people are getting real pissed. If you’re flooded and you can rip out your carpets and sheet rock withing a day or two your good. Going on 10 days now and mold is going to be a major problem.

Didn’t realize there were other Lavallette residents on Swaylocks.  Maybe we should get together for a house-burning party since that is all our homes are going to be good for when they finally let us back over to discover the mold has taken over and ruined what could have been salvaged and repaired.

I know you guys are frustrated but don't let it get to you. I too have been stuck on the other side of the bridge when they won't let you on the island. But admittedly not for 10 days. It's a time to be strong for your families and keep them calm.

Almost all of the houses here that people did get in early and rip all the rugs, etc.out of still had to be gutted. Some had to be leveled. The damage is already done. If you were inundated in saltwater, that's even worse.

Those poured concrete homes on pilings, with concrete roofs and all (Keys style), are starting to look better and better all the time to this Florida boy.

That sucks guys, keep it together, our thoughts are with you.

OK Here is a small bit of good news Jack Johnson  The Surfing singing writer of songs has donated $50,000 to Hurricane Sandy Relief.

I will be allowed into my home tomorrow (legally this time) for 2 hrs.  It will be interesting to see if I any mold has grown and if the smell has increased since last Thursday.  Will post results when I get back.

Surfifty, message me sometime when you get things in order (I’m still in the same process as well) and maybe we can get together/lend a hand to each other and others not as fortunate (I’m specifically thinking of all the older folks in town who can’t physically do the things that might be necessary once the salvage/clean-up starts).

Any idea how Chadwick Beach fared?  I am finally getting back to life as normal…somewhat.  Still don’t have heat other than a portable kerosene heater.  Waiting for insurance adjusters to come.  Have a new roof going on this week and a new heater going in by the end of the week.  Will have to gut the first floor of the house.  Nowhere else we’d rather be so we are staying in the mold and mess.

One bit of good news:  They did open NC 12 between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe to 4WD so I will not have to cancel my Thanksgiving trip away from here.

E Aloha crew,…

It seems as if the National media have looked the eastcoast over and said,… “forget 'em”.,…my family members faired better than most of you guys, and I’m grateful for that.
For those that have access I’d recommend that you pound the “surfer sites” with photos and accounts of real challenges that you have and you are facing----the public need to know your plight!!!–you can’t be ignored.

What can your Sway family do for you?

Aloha Nui Loa, Randy
