Just got back from Lavallette. Lavallette faired well compaired to other towns…Ortley/Seaside. My house is still a soggy mess and the mold is starting to set in. We only had two hours so personal items were removed first.
Mako, when I ventured in by boat last week, Chadwick Island stood up well. The homes on the bay front side of the island had little damage to the main structures, but decks and docks were torn apart. Some boats half sunk others knocked off of their lifts. For the most part not too bad, but I m sure that there is water damage. I have no Idea about the beach side. The ocean front homes at Ocean Beach Unit 3 took a real beating if that is any indication.
Hacky will PM you when things get sorted out. I m on the north end of town.
Much of Chadwick got hit hard as well. I 'm pretty sure a number of smaller houses on the low ground near the bay that are no longer standing. Not sure about the ocean and middle blocks. For those familiar with the area, the south end of Normandy (as far north as I got) got whacked as well, looking much like Ortley. D&K Marine got hit really hard, with boats and work trucks piled up three or four high.
Here is a film by Rick Starick on the experience of riding through Sandy and surfing afterwards.
Based on this footage, it looks like at least the north end of LBI
fared relatively well. I hear the southern half of the island got hit
harder and flooded more (most likely due to lower elevation and a flatter
profile of the beach-and-developed-area), perhaps the same as some of
those areas on the barrier island to the north.
I can tell you
it looks like a war-zone up here (Seaside-through-Normandy) with crushed
houses on the ocean blocks, some of which were steam-rolled by sections
of boardwalk and other houses that came in with the surge. Even some
houses located in the center of town or even by the bay-side were
undermined by the sea and waves rushing down the streets.
Surfifty, sounds good. I hear the north end of town fared a bit better than the south due to a little more elevation and dune protection… I even hear a few blocks of boardwalk survived up that way.
If any of my Sways brothers lost their quivers, I was able to move and save all of mine, so if you need a board in the interim I can probably loan you one. Another option, if interested, is local shaper rdj/gallery (a sways member) weathered the storm and is offering to shape new custom boards for surfers who lost their quivers to Sandy for very low prices (knowing him, he is probably making zero profit or even eating costs).
Hey Sak that’s nice to offer up your boards, you’ve got some sick Coils I saw at the ABP event. Great thing that Gallery is doing. You are correct about LBI, north end is OK, middle and south got smashed.
Check out this link, has before and after shots. Scroll down to Ortley and Brick, blocks of houses just gone. That one of Brick there’s about 40 houses completely gone. That shot of Ortley looks like the spot a hair south where ABP was.
I have some aerial shots (Google Damage Map) of the entire coast. I’ve been sending pics to freinds who can’t get to their houses yet to get an idea of what they are dealing with. If anybody needs a pic of you’re area let me know.
Insurance people? They are so swamped with work that it is almost impossible to get an appointment for an inspection, then they need to be escorted in with the home owner.
We are allowed in for three days to strip out rugs, remove personal items and generally clean up. Tomorrow is the last of those three days, then we will see what happens next. The place is more of a mess then what you see in the pictures.
