I came across an interesting board for sale (high performance longboard, 9’ x 22" x 2 1/2") that has a buckle on one side of the bottom. The buckle goes from the rail (does not go onto the rail) to the stringer (not over the stringer) and is about 1" wide.
With a board this thin, is it worth it/not recommended to cut out and reglass the buckled section?
I’m not very hard on my boards but I weigh 185 and I rarely go out in anything over head high surf.
Doesn’t sound like a buckle, to me. What you describe sounds more like an impact ding, or ‘crunch’. I have never seen a board that buckled on just one side of the stringer, and did not have any visible failure in the rail.
Thanks for the replies. I passed on the board and it was sold later in the day. Hopefully the buyer knows what he’s getting. The seller acted surprised when I pointed out the damage.
SammyA, I know what you mean. I had never seen anything like it before either. It looked like a regular buckle but it only went from rail to stringer. The rail did have some minor damage but nothing too excessive. The board was extremely light (especially for it’s size) and it seems like a matter of time before it snaps if a heavy rider is on it.
In the damage you described, I wouldn’t cut out much at all.
Just power sand the buckled section and lay a good ol’ cloth (or 2 layers of cloth) over the whole wide area. Maybe a foot wide, to be sure I’m creating enough new area of strength.
