i bought some resin about a month ago (sanding, gloss, and lam) and I opened it today (stored in brand new gas tanks) and the sanding and gloss had sort of a milky haze to it. so i did a tst batch of the 3 the lam went off fine but the other 2 stayed milky. it was stored in my garage hich is a gym and the temperature is pretty sheltered in other words the temperature wouldent be too extreme. the only thing i can think is the temp change did something to the styrene but i dont know. any help would be much appreciated.
Since it was the hotcoat and gloss that looked milky, it could just be that the wax has separated a little. Did you try stirring it before you tested it? When you say the tests also looked milky, was it just on the surface? If so, it probably is the wax and shouldn’t be a problem.
I suspect it could be just the wax separating out off the solution. I get this problem when the solution is cold which is half of the year here in the UK. I gentle warming in cold weather usually cures the problem - before mixing with catalyst.
Although I have experiencing the same problem with old solutions - how old is this stuff ?
its only a little more than a month old i tried stirring it and someone suggested heating it i did that but nothing has worked. when i did the test batch as far as i could tell the resin was milky all the way through.
If the milky appearance seems to go all the way through, the resin may have a small amount of water in it - condensation perhaps. It’s strange, though, that only the waxed resin is hazy (which would lead you to believe that it has something to do with the wax). If I had the problem, I’d lay up a small piece of glass, hotcoat it, sand it, gloss it and polish it. That way you could see if the haziness is apparent in the final product.
