Mingei Museum Balboa Park Shape/Design

For anyone who is in the San Diego area, just a heads-up for the current temporary exhibit at the Mingei Museum in Balboa Park around surfcraft design.

A beautiful selection of early wood boards - including several by Simmons - and some wild later stuff. Great Paipo stuff, too. My son got all fired up and is using the front half of an old longboard blank reject to make his first paipo now.

Well worth the effort to visit.

A real focus on Carl Ekstrom, among others. The timing was great as I just picked up a 9’7"  '68 Ekstrom Batfin model. A quick session in waist-high surf says this one’s a small-wave keeper.

As we were leaving, they were setting up the “beach market” or whatever it was they had going that night. Super funny how how the hype-related “artistic” scene that took over the exhibit had so little to do with the beach…

Enjoy!

looks interesting…

Richard Kenvin curated this exhibit and there is a nicely done book of the boards in the show available at the Museum Store and also at SHACC.

SHACC will be giving a presentation at the Mingei on September 26, from noon til 1pm. CLICK HERE for more info.
