Just got done shaping a 6’8" mini gun ( seems too small to even fit in that cat.) and wanted some suggestions on fin placement. Nose - 11.5 Midpoint - 18 3/4 Tail - 11 3/4. It’s 2 3/4 thick and holds the volume throughout the board to still give me some float. This board will generally be ridden in 5 - 10’ surf that is generally not hollow but does have “those days”. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.
Look at the board from the profile and the template…
Imagine where you’ll be standing for the best turning and some amount of trim ability…
Imagine where your back foot is to be placed…place the leading edge of single fin there, or an inch back from the leading edge of the side fins for tri or quad right there.
Measurement from stringer to leading edge of front fin 5"
Measurement from stringer to trailing edge of front fin 5 1/4"
Measurment from tip of tail to rear edge of
Front fin 11 1/4 Rear fin 3 1/2
…Or , you could always use plugs / boxes , so you could move your fins forward or back [or both !] for different conditions. And also you could have single , twin , "widowmaker "/ “2+1” , OR thruster options , that way…
With a tail that narrow you’ll need the rail fins at 12", and you might consider 3/16" toe-in. Narrower tail run with fins further forward, in general, because there is not much planing power in the tail and your center of planing mass will be further forward.
More rocker, less toe-in, but you won’t want to go below 3/16" on a 6’8", I don’t think.
As it stands now the nose rocker is 5.5 and the tail rocker is 2. Are you saying I should move the cluster forward of the dimensions I gave earlier. I’m a little confused after reading your post. Thanks.
What I think he’s saying - and what I agree with - is just expand the cluster with that narrow a tail. Keep the trailer fin where it would always be and bring the side fins forwards by .5-1.0" That will provide a little bit of lift in the tail so you don’t sink it & lose speed.
Yeah, my mistake. The tail rocker is 2.5. I was going to bump that up but ended up leaving it. Thanks for the advice on the fins. Much appreciated. Now to try to figure out the toe-in.

A 3/16" toe-in will be a little trackier, come off the bottom a little worse, and hold a little better, than a 1/4". And paddle and drop-in a little faster. If you want to generate speed you want 1/4", but for turning performance and hold the 3/16" willl be better.
On BIG wave boards the toe-in can be as low as 1/8".
