just shaped an 8’ mini-longboard. i want to put a fin box and two FCS side fins on it and have no idea where to place them. my guess is the box should go 6" from the tail and the trailing edge of the side fins about 14 - 14 1/2" from the tail. am i in the ballpark? also, what’s the minimum thickness my tail needs to be to support a fin box? kirk
i haven’t built any minis, but i was just looking at an 8’ Bruce Jones and i think your estimates are in the ball park, after looking at his. he’s got a 10" fin box about 5 1/2" away from the tail, and the aft FCS plug’s center line appears to be exactly where the box ends (which would be about 15 1/2, no?). if i remember correctly, you want at the VERY least 1 1/8" of thickness where your box goes. maybe Noodle or some other guys with mini/tri experience will have some advice for you! I scanned top and bottom and saw only mini/tri… shortboard. Doh! Okay, my brain’s better now. I like 5.5" to 6" for the center box and 12.5" for the thruster boxes. But I’m no pro. 5.5" to 6.5" for center and 12" to 14.5" for thrusters will work fine. Bunching them with 6.5" and 12" is considered sketchy. Thruster trailing edges go 1.25" from the rail. I am getting ready to do a 8-0 mini also and I would be curious on what you settled on. I was told on your larger performace LB’s (9-4 and up) you should set the front of a 10 inch box 15 inches from the tail, and set the front edge of your side bites 18 inches from the tail.
