Does anyone based in Florida know where I can get my hands on a Mini Simmons style blank? Or am I just going to have to look for a longboard blank and cut it in two?
I’m based in Orlando so I’m about 6 hours away from any point in the state and don’t mind driving to get my hands physically on a blank.
I don't think there are any dedicated ''Mini-Simmons'' blanks, unless you cut it yourself out of polystyrene. Some of the oversize fish plugs from US Blanks would probably work if you're doing a short one. Atlantic Surfoam in Melbourne is the distributor. Talk to Skip at 321-259-1508.
I guess I should clairify. I was just wondering what most people use for a Mini Simmons. I figured a longboard blank would have the width and thickness I need and I could just cut it in half (the problem then becomes how to work in the rocker).
But you say the fish blanks work just as well? I’m looking at a design about 4’11"x23"x3"
You can check your desired outline/rocker/foil against the US Blanks catalog, see what ''fits''. Skip might be able to help with that also, but they are a wholesale operation so keep that in mind if you call. You can also do custom rocker glue-ups if you're willing to wait for next container shipment. One of the fish blanks glued flat would be the closest to shape you're going to find.
im in new smyrna and just made a 5'0''x22 1/2''x2 7/8'' mini simmons out of a 6'2'' eskimo rich pavel blank trust me theres enough foam in that blank for what your making not sure what usblanks has got to match but the pavel blanks are especially flat great for mini simmons'
Yeah, I tested out a few blanks my shaper has from US Blanks and my biggest problem is that the US Blanks don’t have enough thickness through them. I’d like to have at least 2 1/2" on the tail and nose with a wide point of 23" and the tail coming in around 21"…I know it’s pretty boxy and most blanks aren’t gonna fit it. I might be outta luck.
yea mines probally arround 2 1/8 thick in the tail and 2 in the nose , but i put an 1/4'' deck concave on my mini simmions so you might be able to get that thickness but i dont know for sure
you want a 21'' wide tail!!!!! holy shit thats wide mines only 19'' and i barely squeased it outa there you just might be outta luck with the 6'2'' blank. Im going to my shaper today to make a few more boards ill mesure the 6'8'' an 7'2'' eskimos and see if you can get that width and thickness out of there then ill post
NSB: Yeah, 21" might be a bit lofty of a goal. I’m still tweaking the design. My shaper has never shaped anything that small so we are both in uncharted territory. Any advice you have with the mini simmons? I’m looking to make it a fish tail as well, if you have any opinion on that.
Tom: I actually just checked it out. That one may actually work really well. I’m just not sure if the outline I have designed will fit. Oh well, might need to make a board that fits the blank instead of the other way around.
the one i just made has a 19'' wide tail with a 17'' wide moon tail so its not quite a swallow but simmiler, if you gonna put a swallow on yours i would sugest not makeing it too deep simply because the board is already so short thats less area where you can put your back foot, i would only go with a swallow tail depth of about 4'' instead of a traditonal 5 1/2'' or 6'' on an average fish
also i messured the 6'8'' blank its just barely wide enough to faciliatate a 21'' wide tail its fine on all your other deminsions though 6'8'' is the way to go my personal oppinion
