Let me open by saying that I was amazingly fortunate to be tutored by a local shaping legend Robert Strickland. I spent close to a year spending time with him learning to shape for a senior project back in high school. Needless to say I learned a ton and made a lot of memories. About two years later Robert Died in a scuba diving accident in the keys
shortly after that I lent the board to an ex girlfriend who in turn lent it to another guy and he buckeled the nose about 5 inches down. needless to say I was pissed off. I havent done anything with the board in close to 10 years and it just sits in the corner.
So now to the point of the topic. I have a 7’10 mini longboard and I am thinking about chopping it down and converting it into a mini simms 5’9 22 3/4x18 3/4x18. My though process is to cut the board right above the old fin box and about a foot down or so from the nose leaving the nose a little boxy, theres still a good amount of nose rocker that far back. My goal is to limit the amount of glass that I have to take off. If i remove the wax from the board and give it a good sanding job can i re glass the board? I was thinking about getting some tuff lite or marine paint and finishing it off that way.
Will this work and what kind of problems could I run into? I have read a lot of posts about how this can be a real pain but the board has a ton of emotional attachment and I would like to get it back in the water so I can relive some memories.
