Alright ive got my blank with the airbrush drying and im wondering how you guys mix your epoxy? Ive got the clear plastic buckets with the measurments in ounces on the side. do you pour it all in the same bucket and mix? Use 2 buckets and pour in a 3rd then mix? What about mixing small quantities for basting laps and setting fins?
Well, I’m a rookie, but I’m batting 1000 with my mix over more than a dozen boards. A journeyman such you should have no problems. All in all, I wouldn’t go back to poly for anything. Here what I do:
Use the 12 or 14 oz cups from EZ. They are tall and skinny and give more accurt results than a short fat bucket. You can hold them up to the light to see the graduation marks. Look for the minicus like in chem lab.
Small batches are harder, but I use small cups also from EZ and usually end up with more thn I need, but accurately mixed.
If mixing a total of more than 12 oz, measure in the cups and pour into the bigger bucket. I use regular paint mixers with the color print scaped off and thoughly scape each part into the bigger bucket, then mix/stir/scape the combined batch covering the bottom and sides several times. Count to 50 and pour in such a way that you minimize the distance you have to move it to cover the cloth. It soaks in better than poly but if you move too fast and/or far, it can froth a little.
Hope this helps. .1

I use the graduated plastic 28 oz. containers with the green markings, found at most home improvement places. Sometimes they can be reused up to 4-5 times if you drain them at the end of your lams. Once they get really funky I’ll still mix my “bog” or filler in them.
I’m in the the habit of pouring my resin volume into one of these, pop it in the microwave on HIGH for 10-15 sec. depending on the volume, improves mixing and flow. Next using the same container, I’ll add any pigment (I do lots of color work with epoxy), then I’ll pour in the hardener volume and a shot of Additive F. I stir using large tongue depressors and no less than 2 min or so, scraping sides and bottom occasionally. Hope that helps, send in some pics.

A good and accurate way for mixing small amounts is syringes available from pharmacies (no needle of course), and for a bit larger amounts the big vets syringes.
I’ve made two long boards (my first attempt at shaping/glassing) with epoxy but have just been hearing about this Additive F. What is it, where can I get it, etc. I want to learn! I will be making another two boards (full carbon/epoxy) this next fall.

If you follow this board alot you will see posts from Greg Loehr. Around here he is the Epoxy/resin expert. He has a company called Resin Research and he makes his own Epoxy formula specifically for surfboards. Additive F is made specifically for his products. His prices are also competitve with polyester and cheaper than some of the other epoxy resins ive seen. You can email him at GL10@aol.com for more info
