Modified Planer Pics ROCK/SKIL

I have been meaning to post these for awhile now.  I took the planer to a machinist and he cut the front end of a Skil 100 off and bolted it to the 653.  You can see the one bolt in the pic just past the cutter head.  It cuts a half inch.  I used to ghost shape a ton of LB’s.  I used this planer to get the blanks down to thickness quick. Two other people have used it and loved it.

Electricsurfer-

Thanks for the pictures. What a beast…did you make a hole in the top for a vacuum hose too?

+1 to help you get to 10 points to reply. You should be able to edit the first post in this thread until then.

Nice job.

Thanks for posting that pic.

I tell all my shaper buddies about that planer.

I want.

Thanks.  I love the planer and it is a beast.  I did cut a hole in it for a vacuum attachment.

Having shaped thousands of boards with a properly modified 653, and the last few years using a Skil, I can only say give me one the other way aound. The lever of the 653 when nice and loose is way more sensitive and responsive than the Skil…2 cents worth.

Ace,

I’d love to see a shot of your “properly modified” 653.

I have put pictures up before…Main thing is a loose floppy shoe. And a reshaped handle that allows the thumb and forefinger to rotate the knob, mind out of gutter. Again pretty sure photos aleady exist somewhere on Swaylocks. When set up right the little finger side of hand almost ride across the blank you feel every little change. The two fingers controlling lever go from closed to wide open with ease becomes very intuitive…5 cents worth

I agree regarding the shoe adjustment on the 653 being a little nicer.  The 653 just weighs a ton and I do mostly small boards so mine gathers dust.  Even my skil 100 is a little big for most of the boards I’ve made lately.
