i always find that when i am done installing a fin box i need to do a bunch of extra touching up inside the box with a file to remove plastic flashing from the injection molding so that the fin will fit everywhere inside the box. it seems like it might be better to have a taper fit of maybe like 10 deg so that the screw would just pull the fin into a closer tolerance fit box. with the vertical sides it always seems to make it hard to get a good fit without using some sort of shim that i make out of a pop can or aluminum foil. is it just that the FU style box has been standard for so long and all the fins are made to fit that? does the ofishl box with the closed lid have a better fit than the FU box? does anyone have any suggestions or know of other fin boxes that are alot better. thanks for any help and info. trev
Trev, My partner and his brother made the original O’Fish’l molds. However, I was not involved with the company at that time. I am confident that the O’Fish’l boxes do not have a flash problem. I have spoken with Larry Allison regarding Fins Unlimited’s box versus O’Fish’l’s box. He said there was a tolerance problem with O’Fish’l initially they adjusted it out. The reason the boxes have parallel walls and the roll pin at the same elevation is industry standard. They give up a more positive base fit to provide all the existing fins on the market to fit. Red X Fin System was designed with a matching taper root/cavity box. We use an extremely tough glass filled polyurethane to keep the weight down and the strength and fit maximized. We have two long board side bite fins available currently and laminated lonboard center fins are available upon request.
