Mowin' Styro for the 1st Time......

fun, isn’t it???

Mowin it for the first time was fine. Getting a nice smooth finish, a la Clark foam, didn’t happen for me. Is it possible not to get a finished shape the texture of cottage cheese? Seems to tear kind of easy when shaping the rails in the nose area. I did a filler smudge of resin and cabosil on mine. Can’t wait to try the next one. mike

No screen, use sanding blocks and sandpaper…maybe 100grit in the nose

even sanding with #120 you get half cottage cheese. And the other half is nice and smooth but doesn’t get sanded down too good. Yeah each side of the nosetip stringer can virtually crumble b4 your eyes. Does the spackle mixture fill the cottage cheese well or is it back to the sanding mines?

What density foam are you guys using?

I have had the same problems when I shaped my last few boards. They were made with foam insulation sheets, about 0.7 - 1 # /cu.ft.

I just bought myself a block (12" x 48" x 96") of 2# EPS, and am anxious to see how it turns out. I’m thinking it will be better, the foam if much denser to the touch and the beads are smaller. Should be organised to do start in a week or two.

J troy and others,

Yes, I learned not to use the screen. I didn’t go at it very hard with the screen because the foam didn’t feel like screen would cut it cleanly. I went to the sandpaper for better results. This was an eps 7’4"r knock off. # 2 foam. The epoxy filler did not completey fill the voids. I laminated it and it came out o.k. It’s different to shape. Not as pleasurable of a finished shape as the Clark foam. From a sample size of 1 board keep in mind. Probably my technique and am looking forward to learning and improving with this type of foam. mike

#2

rooster ,

After block sanding. Try using a soft or even medium pad on your grinder with 40 or 60 grit slow speed tip to tail. Use this as your final step. And watch it smooth out.

If you can get the 3# density it will evan shape nicer. If your not going to airbrush you don’t even have to spackle it.

Liki,

Do you know the bead size of your 2#? Our’s is c-bead (very small).

sounds shithouse ,

why don’t you guys just use good old shapeable polyurethane foam …

ben

oh , I forgot …you don’t HAVE any now ???

Easy for you to say in OZ. Only the big guy’s are getting the pu here and it is expensive. The EPS is really not that bad, just a learning curve. And the final product is stronger and lighter than pu.

Liki custom beer coolers inc. You might be on to something. you could airbrush them then glass them and they would last forever. $29.95 .I’ll take two.lol.

I thought so. But the one on your user pic is a much bigger flame. Is that your biggest ever? Hey, be careful you could catch something on fire.

there’s one on google images where some poor guy sets himself on fire …I think he blew inwards by accident …fart hiccups , I guess ?

brrrrrrtttttt

My wife just called me immature. We better just talk about surfboard building and stuff. BRRRRT. Excuse me.

I call myself immature , in the absence of a wife to abuse me

Damn thet’s great news I thought I was crazy for doing that to myself. I feel your pain. Ahhh to be in love.
