Multiple small concaves

I just bought a used 8’ egg yesterday. It has several smallish (grapefruit size) concaves scattered around the bottom near the fins, reminds me of golf ball dimpling. Anyone know what the purpose of this would be?

I don’t pick the board up until this afternoon, but I’ll post a pic when I do. It’s not a major shaper’s design, I don’t think…something like Willis Bros or something like that. Anyway, just curious because I’ve never seen anything like that before.

Thanks.

Some thought back in the early '70’s and recycled since, that the golf ball theory makes the board looser and easier to turn.

Less drag straight forwards, also less drag sideways. No real gain, no real loss, except fun fun for the shaper, glasser, and sander.

dings.

They’re definitely not dings. Very intentional concaves, all the same size, in a staggered pattern. I think Lee is telling it right…it looks like something from the 70’s. I’ll post a pic later tonight.

it’s called a phazer, there’s a photo in the glossary:

Holy crap! That’s the board…it is a Willis Bros too. Unfortunately the bastards at the surf shop (SurfRide in Oside) sold the damn board out from under me. The were supposed to keep it on hold until today but some dipstick sold it anyway. I’m so bummed right now. Still no board…and I went to 7 other shops…no one has anything even close to an 8’ egg. Guess I’ll go cry in my beer. Damn I’m pissed. sigh
