Got a little CD player in the shed. Have one disc that I shape by. Find it very calming and nostalgic at the same time. Pink Floyd - Welcome to the Machine. Used to listen to that when having to drive down the coast a ways to surf…semi-early morning road trip. Foggy outside before first light…damn foggy inside too! Pulling up at dawn and seeing nice waves…Yahoo! By the way…Which one’s Pink???
I’m not sure I’m actually listening to it! I never seem to realize when the disc runs out…There are times when I need silence also. Music CAN be distracting when played too loud or bad choice.
Chicago style blues. Muddy Waters, Big Walter, Charlie Musselwhite. I drink Coors because it does’nt get me buzzed when working. I can’t hear the music when the planer is mowing. I’m just getting to the point where I can tell how much material is being removed by the sound of the planer. Mike
so far have 3500 songs in the Ipod - who’s main purpose is shaping room motivator- playlists range from old school punk for those 6-8 board start to finnish days to trad surf ( ventures , dick dale ) for the cruisy 4 board days to the ocasional chet atkins/johnn burnette trio list for those 3 stick nose block tail block all the bells and whistle days!
oh yeah what about Rome for the I’m Anoyyed with that where’s my board guy days – S.A.
I have a set of 4 7" records of DagNasty (82-86) that I put on tape which are great and I like to listen to.
But usually I mellow it down
Jazz June “The Sound, The Motion, the Boom”
Jets to Brazil “Four Cornered Night” and/or “Orange Rhyming Dictionary”
Ween “The Mollusk” (distorted indie with a definitive ocean theme)
The Weakerthans “Fallow” and “Lost and Leaving”
It goes on, but these are my favorites.
And SoulSlider, there is a guy, Jamie Collins, that does an amazing version of the Wind Cries Mary. I usually don’t like Hendrix covers, but this guy does it justice. Check it out…
the music IS the board …try shape to Gabby Pahinui and the sandwich isle band…the board is different than jimmy hendrix all along the watchtower and then shape to Shaherezade…that makes me feel like the victory at sea vibe…the input equals the out put … the vibration that goes in surely affects the curve interpretation coming out…I can hear my fathers favorite tune from the victory at sea sound track and feel the pitch and roll in my bones " No Greater Love Have I",richard heart… the visual input from the on deck camera on a heavy cruiser in 30’ seas is in me and if I were to shape to that there would undoubtedly be an effect… the lovin spoonfol makes a great hot dog nose ride doodle board…ambrose… can we get a grant for this study? shaping room sensory depravation chamber- music input different each board same blank same template same music glassing…
Reggae all the way! Or if Im building a board for someone I might listen to what they like. I agree with ambrose, with any art, the environment around you and what you are feeling has a certain influence on the outcome.
