hey guys i have just started shaping my 1st epoxy/EPS board, Its a 6ft 2 retro fish 21 wide 2 1/4 thick twin fin. i have made the blank myself from 28kg rated eps sheets glued together with expoy on rocker table with redwood stringer.
i read a few old threads on here and people say to put a very light coat of filler on the blank after shaping ,then sand off just to fill the voids.
i want to know if any of you guys know the best filler here in NZ to use, or if thats the best way.
i am using kinetic resin. I know there are a few people who hate the stuff but i got a bit that i need to use up before i try that new stuff brian has at hardcore
also i was wanting to try a very light color tint (lime and clear swirl maybe) in the reisn and wanted to know what works for tinting kinetic resin?
i have been told that a little pu resin tint will work but just want to know if any of you guys have had trouble with this way? also would coloring the filler coat be a better idea?
I was planning on glassing 1 layer 6oz on the bottom and 1 6oz on top with a large ( 2/3rds of board)6oz deck patch do you guys think that will be strong enough with the foam i am using on the blank? i am not that worried about weight of board so could do 2 layers 6oz on the top if its needed
i posted a pic of the glue up of the blank will put more pics up when board cut out
The red devil lightweight filler or selleys lightweight filler (blue container at the warehouse) work well. Dont use the pink selleys coloursmart one! Thin them down with water so they are runny and apply with a plastic spreader. Gloved hand to do the rails, Make sure you let it set overnight and give a light sand, comes up smooth as.
If you are going to spray colour its worth doing a second coat of spackle or seal with a sandable primer.
Your glassing schedule seems a little light - if weight isnt an issue I would suggest either
6 oz or 4+4 bottom and 6+6 with a 4oz (3/4 patch) deck minimum
The 28kg foam is pretty soft ( equlivent to 1.75 #) and compresses alot
Take care shaping around the glue line, it is worth getting a larger block next time and hotwiring your rocker or just bite the bullet and get a PU or EPS blank.
here pic of board shape i just cut it out have not thinned out the blank yet.
hey any feed back on the shape would be great as i have never shaped or surfed an old school board like this and if the numbers do not work now is the time to change them, i am 90kgs and 5 11 tall
its got 3 3/4 inch nose lift 1 1/2 inch tail lift wide point of board 4 3/8 inchs in front of board, center tip to tip of fish tail 12 inchs and butt crack 4inchs deep, board will be around 2 1/8 thick now
hey so i tacked my keels on i set the 5 1/4 up from the tale 1 1/8 in from the rail 3/16 toe at 4 inchs from the tail of fin and 5deg cant i hope this will work ok i took a strait edge and lined it up past the nose it ended up just under 2 inches of the center of nose
almost done just need to finish wet sanding and put leg rope plug in. me and a few mates heading down the coast this weekend and hope the swell work for use to give the board a good run in.
