My 2012/2013 Noserider Build Thread

$245

Hey Tenover, I’ve made two flip template boards myself and I love em.

Hope this pic shows up.

Nice blank....we can air brush fake stringers and T bands for next to nothing...maybe next time....

I have a full roll of 30" wide 4oz cloth if anyone needs some....good price too......Looking good so far....

Nice looking board yaar!  That’s pretty close to what I’m going to do in terms of color too.  Would you mind explaining how you got the color like that?  From the looks of the rails, it looks to be done during the lamination, right? How did you get the clean separation, and did you glass it all at once or in segments s some have suggested in other threads?   Thanks.

Scott,

It's done in the lamination, don't over analyze it.

Like Lowell said, the first color to hit the foam wins.  So if you want clear spots..do clear resin, if you want color, do color. BUT when you are all done laying down the resin..clear and colored alike Pour another bucket of clear resin over the lamination to lock everything down.

Have lots of clean squeegeegies handy

When doing to colored bands, obviously work rail to rail. try to level the board where the bands will start and stop.  meaning if you are doing a band where the rocker is steep, you will get a saggy line.

Don't pull the resin too hard on the colors, and try to keep the colors compartmentalized on the board..meaning don't go looking for trouble by pushing colored resin into the clear stuff.

But the trick is locking down the colored and clear resin with a batch of clear resin when you a done with the wet out / saturation / semi lamination type thingy phase...or W.S.S.L.T.T. phase.

It's not hard to do, don't make it difficult.

Yep, that is better than i could explain it.  Lots of clean squeegies is key if you want a tight color separation.

One thing I love about the switched rocker is that after you get your bottom turn and get a good trim going, stepping forward is like stepping on the gas pedal. Takes a few times to figure it out but man it is fun.

Cant wait to see your updates.

Thanks Jay and Steve.  That’s the info I was looking for.

Hey Ten,
Pulled me out of sways retirement for this one. I do the back ¾ of the board first with clear and wet it out completely. Then I use a chip brush to saturate the orange edge next to the clear. After the edge is saturated I finish wetting out the orange. Once both are saturated and laps are flipped I go back with a clean squeegee and tighten up my break line and laps on the breakline. Use gravity to your advantage. Hope that helps.

That is awesome…Thanks Austin, much appreciated.  In my garage purging and cleaning right now trying to decide if I’m gonna shape it in here or if I’m gonna rent out the shaping room at Birds Surf Shed for a day…

There you go boys!  Expert advice from an Expert;------  a la Senor Austin.

I would think the Birds experience would be worth the money.  Better than cleaning the garage,  Remember to get us some pics as you go thru the process.  I’m thinkin’ that beautiful blank is gonna make a beautiful noserider.  Definitly would like to see that blank in its stages( ie skinned, blocked, rail turned etc.).   Lowel

Basic outline cut. I’m(obivously) a hack…  Will true it all up tonight with a 36 grit block. My cut is wavey and varies between 1’4"-1/2" from my line in this picture.  Dimensions will be:  9’6", 19" nose, 23 1/2" wide about 2" behind center, 15 1/2" tail and 8"(tip to tip) square tail.

Outline’s been trued up to where I want it.  Have access to a friends shaping shack tomorrow and am planning spending however long I need there tomorrow to get the board shaped.  I’ll try to take some pics.  Thanks for all the helpful advice on the “hand dipped” laminating technique, much appreciated. And thanks Keith, I’ll stop by next week.  How does Tuesday work for you…    Kidding…kidding…

tuesday is christmas… I’ll be around, other than surfing.  swing on by!  Don’t forget the eggnog!

Well…Today didn’t work out for a ton of reasons…I rented the shaping bay at Birds for tomorrow.  Stoked.

I shaped the board today at Birds Surf Shed.  Highly recommended if you don’t have a good place to shape and you’re in San Diego.  $50 for the day($25 if you buy a blank from him), and all Bird asks is that you sweep up when you’re done.  I brough all my own tools but ended up using none of them except my hoby planer.  He has everything needed to shape.  I forgot to take pics of the final shape, but I will before I glass.  These are just random shots I took when I remembered to. I was more concerend about getting it done.

I need some advice on how to get stringers down…Both in general and especially on this board, which has a 3/4" red cedar stringer. I could be totally “done” shaping, and then I go to take a final pass on the stringer and end up making some small “chatter” on either side.  Then I try to go clean it up with a hard block and the process starts all over again…It’s my nemisis.

Just found this in the archives regarding my exact question…

Tenover, there is an empty room at Westlake on the hill, so with that said, I’m only 18" away from showing you how to deal with Big troublesome Wood
