No need to be dismissive or name call "bro".
I would like to see the router technique. I can’t visualize it, seems like overkill to me. The mini-plane seems simple and easy, but I like learning alternate ways of doing things. Have you got pics or a video or something?
Any updates on this?! Stoked to see the outcome.
Me too!
Board is completely shaped. Temps are “cold” here in San Diego right now(50’s F)…Just got a pneumatic angle grinder in the mail today from Harbor Freight for sanding cutlaps…Stoked. Both sides will have cutlaps, with an orange opaque resin job on the nose(both sides), and the rest of the board clear(still having a hard time visualizing how to do that without 10+ squeegees!!)…At least that is what I’m shooting for… Waiting for outside temps to get to about 70 or so before I glass it. My next-door neighbor (Fiberlay…http://www.fiberlay.com/) is supplying me with all the resin, surfacing agent, etc…, so I’m waiting on that as well. I WILL post pics as soon as there’s any progress…
Are you planning to grind the whole lap?? You can press in most all of the lap with a small plastic roller after your razor blade cut. Then hand sand the nose and tail overlap (if you have any overlap). I have never had to use a grinder on a clean cut lap.
I haven’t either, always done it by hand. And yeah, the small roller technique works great…Just thought it’d be someting nice to have in case I wanted it…I’ve done a few decent logs, all with full cutlaps, tints, etc…The problem is that I only build logs for myself, and I only need to build them every few years… So I tend to forget things… I DID build one last year, but don’t like it at all…Hence, this one. Here’s a few pics of my past log builds.
Those look sweet
I still have to clean up the stringer a bit…And I’m going to thin out the nose and tail(Like I like 'em!) just a little bit. Should have all the glassing materials delivered this week.
Everything you’ve done there past and present looks good to me. Carry on.
Ok, will do. Thanks. ;)
Hey a question for ya; Where you get that nice old school fin on the yellow fboard? Mitch’s? You going with a glass-on on this new one?? Lowel
I got that fin from Gene Cooper. Doing a glass-on fin on this board too, but am looking at something like Rainbows “Pivot Full” fin.
It’s gonna be sweet!
Can’t wait to see the final pics!
Stoked. Exactly what I was looking for. Decided to do more of a “tint” so the custom stringer showed. I like it. Ok, ok…I tried for opaque, but it came out more a “tint” …I’m still happy with it. Mixed up a Qt. of resin and kicked it at 14cc. Wasted a TON of resin, but hey…Like Keith said, it’s all about making mistakes.
Need a little glassing help…Haven’t glassed with poly since 2007. I’m glassing this board with 8oz. volan, cutlaps on both sides, and 1/3 to 1/2 will be an opaque color. Two layers top, one layer bottom. I bought a 5-gallon bucket of resin(Fiberlay, P19). I just have no idea how much resin to use per side, or how much catalyst. I’d WAY rather have too much left over than not enough. I was planning on mixing up a gallon of clear for each side, and maybe 1/2 gallon in a separate bucket for the colored resin. So that would put me at about 1 2/3 gallons for each side. Too much? too little?
Again, I need all the help I can get with having enough for laps, etc…
How much catalyst would you put in the clear gallon to give a decent working time in 70 dgree weather, and how much would you put in the 2/3 gallon opaque colored resin?
Thanks in advance.
Looking real nice, stringer will be even better once its glassed.
comlete amature re resin amounts but I lammed my first board a 9ft lb with less than 1 gallon of resin was 6x6 deck and 6 and tail patch bottom so a bit less to wet out.
A gallon per side sounds like a hell of a lot. 2 quarts should be plenty. Maybe even a bit less.
Thanks.
