I just wanted to share some pics of this awesome del cannon “pig?” Longboard I scored. It only needs a few small dings repaired and to have an ancient broken resin leash loop that was added before the stick on leash loop scraped off and I can take it out for a test spin. I really dig the shape, nice rocker for the era, nice fin profile, and bladed rails. Any idea on year made? I’d assume around 1965?
Measures approx. 9’8" x about 22.5"
Your board…
Balsa stringer in awesome shape!
Pig, not to my eye…
But sure looks like a Yater Spoon take.
fits the time period.
Last
very cool fin for the time!
Thanks man, I can’t wait to try it out. Will be the first time on a vintage LB.
I agree with mattwho ( partly). A pig is noticeably wider at the tail than the nose.
It doesn’t look much like a Spoon, though. Is the deck scooped out?
1965-66 sounds about right for year of origin. Fin looks a bit worn, but fits the period (65-66)
Del’s first shop (1965) was right near Trestles, and folks would park there when they wanted to sneak in during the days the Marines had the place on lockdown. One of his shaping mentors was Mike Diffenderfer. Your board has a good pedigree.
In 1957 through 1960, Del shaped for Velzy&Jacobs, and Velzy, in '60. In 1958, Diff was still having his boards shaped for him, by Wayne Land. (Burland Surfboards, in La Jolla) Most likely case was that Del influenced Diff, as he influenced me, when I shaped with him at Velzy, in 1960. On another topic, yes, I think that board is what I call a modified Pig. Not the classic Pig, with WP at 33% up from tail, but WP up around 45% of board length. Example: The Phil Edwards model, is a modified Pig. I think '65/'66, is a good call.
thanks guys. No scoops or step decks on it that I can see, and I was guessing pig-ish (modified pig) because it looks like the wide point is below the halfway point on the board. Thanks for the little bit of history!
