Barry - thanks for your .02! 1/8" is plenty deep for me as I don’t mind a few extra passes in the case of planing a thicker blank. Also, the short fish blanks & psb blanks seem to mostly be ’ near done ', or close to finished…three on bottom, ONe on deck on my twin swallow tail … but 1/4" passes
Would be better for guy’s shaping the big 4" thick lb blank etc…
Well, I’m going to throw thee blades in properly, cinch down the adjustment screws and let her rip! WERE GONNA SHAPE A EGG NEXT!!!
Bill - THANKS AGAIN! I appreciate you taking the time to " wake me up " about not worrying about otf mods…
Bill - when I saw this planer a day earlier I thought hard…during the next morning I woke up at 3:30 am…boom! That planer popped up in my head - thinking about it! I didn’t even hesitate, my fingers went on auto pilot! I pushed that button! Lucky I was on my toes, or it would have been gone…yup, it has low miles! But there a few signs of corrosion. Not bad. I’ll have to pick up a small wire brush, some navel jelly to kill rust… get a spray can and touch up.
Anyway, this planer is not just a planer - it’s a dream come true! No lie it hurt my soul way back.-when I wanted it, but I couldn’t afford it.Now I have it and it’s a keeper.
Don’t tell me you have people asking you why you need it? Fyi it happened to me twice! Don’t you hate it when people - whether family or friend try to control you…
I can tell any of them the same. Why did you buy a new car? Bcuz you wanted it! And that should be good enough. But it isn’t! Some people are nosey assholes!
The Skil planers are great for shaping but I don’t know any carpenter who would use one for carpentry. These are the reasons:
1/ They are (I assume) not double insulated so would be dangerous to use in wet conditions.
2/ They are too heavy. If you’re planing something above your head (As often happens) you want something a bit lighter.
3/ As they are so heavy, if you happen to drop one of a third floor scaffold onto the ground (as happens a few times through the life of a planer) they’ll probably break.
4/ The old skil motors are great for cutting foam as this doesn’t require much load on the motor. They will last pretty much for ever doing this only. Planing timber is a different story. I’m currently working with two guys in their 60’s who reckon that you had to be very carefull not to overload the old planers as they were easy to cook. Modern planers don’t suffer from this so much.
5/ As the skil planers are metal I imagine that getting them wet would cause rust issues. We work in the rain every second day in the winter and I don’t like a skil’s chances of putting up with this kind of abuse.
The most common brand of planer on sites here is Makita, followed by Dewalt and Hitachi.
Heres the wreck I did my 1st board with. It was my dad’s but he said it packed up after it got wet during the storms over the winter so I stripped it, cleaned it, reversed the blades and made this super extraction catch tank thing for it after my garden looked like it had been snowing when I 1st started planing my blank. It lasted just long enough to take the thickness down before it started making some strange worrying noises. Now its got a permanent spot on a shelf in my man shed. Now I got to save for a good one to do my next board.
I know it’s not a skil but that’s my story lol
the stuff I thought was corrosion was merely dust! It was just old wood dust! But my belt cap was just rusted a tiny bit.
Thanks I contacted -PeteC I might get her looked at. But, as it is, it’s not necessary. This is practically brand new! It just needs blades. I’ll email him to let him know I don’t yet need replacement parts. Ty-Bill
I commend you for your efforts on atleast thinning out blank before pp died. If you’re careful you can finish it off w surform, block, and block planing stringer spine down. Good job!
Save up for a skil 100 - you’ll be STOKED BEYOND anything plastic! It took me two/ three weeks to save up doin house painting.
Lol yeah i managed to finish off with a surform. Wasnt too bad really, I enjoyed it while it lasted. Though the planer was ok i think it was harder than it shouldve been. Would love to get a skil but i live in the UK and all the skil 100s seem to be in the USA.
Thanks spuddups, amazing what you can do with a waste drum and an old hoover pipe lol. Even cut a vent hole and a piece of gauze over to prevent it backing up lol.
Call American National Wood Working Knives. They make new blades for the Skil 100. (828-324-7770 Just tell them that you have a Skil 100 planer and you need new blades for it. Cost is about $35.00 + shipping. You have to call because they don’t sell them on there web site and there not listed in there catalog. Or you can buy Accurate blades. They are the same size, and they work perfectly on a Skil 100. You can order them online. http://store.accuratefishing.com/index.php?crn=230 All the Accurate planer accessories Will work on a Skil 100 except the blade leveling attachment (Blades, Dust Chute, Vacuum hose adapter. Brushes, Belt) Or keep your eye out on eBay. They come up from time to time. But when ever they do they are always asking to much for them because they think they are rare. Also if you do buy from eBay you have to really examine the photos to make sure that They haven’t been ground down and sharpened to many times already. Not worth buying from eBay and paying eBay prices when you can buy brand new blades from the two reliable sources I just gave you.
Folk’s - I had a talk w Lowel who told me reasons WHY I might do the OTF (on-the-fly) Mods… I’m not getting into details. But it was - about 6 six good reasons WHY I should go ahead w mods…it’s a SUCCESS! I’m done.
Resinhead - that’s the plan! I just gotta wait for my blades to come in, going surfing on thurs with a friend, and I blew my wad at a Casino…it sucked - literally all my BIRTHDAY $! I cant cry - it’s a gamble…peace
thanks for the info! I know about -PeteC as I contacted him already. But I can’t swing it right now as my planer costed…but at least I secured my dream. As told, I’ve dreamed of owning a skil100 since I was 16! No joke.
Bill- I ended up modifying my pp. But I did a mod w the best of -both world’s…I left the clicker in, but 50/50, or so…maybe I left it a sliver looser? But the good news is, we gotta a --skil100 that cuts OTF like a champion! Anyway, I did the best of - both world’s. I hope we all came away with something here.T c -Jim
I cant shape until I re-up zee dough count…not sure if you read? I blew my wad on my --Birthday! I could have bought another used pp for it…it sucks! I brought too much $ money w me. Lesson learned: only bring what you can afford to lose…now I have to wait for next paycheck.
