My first effort with balsa, now some questions???

Much thanks to the Balsa gurus on sways. Never would have had the guts to try this board without their help. I used 1/16" balsa sheets 4" by 48". Taped them together and vac’d them to 4oz cloth, then vac’d that to the board (epoxy/microballoon filled) with 4oz again.

This construction is so bombproof I would like to get a recomendation on where to find some good 2oz cloth for my next effort(full balsa skins, with rails). I have found some websites that sell it, but would prefer to get a reference from something the rest of you have already used. Thanks in advance

Bottom ready to set proboxes

The top, 2 lb eps center, perimeter stringers, and xps rails. Glassed 4 by 6. I prefer the tigheter weave of the 4oz and put it on top.

thats a cool looking board. cant help you with the cloth thing but can you please tell me how to insert photos with your text like you have? i have no idea… just finished my first board and would like to do the same…

sorry its off the mark a bit…

SICK ONE!!!

Wow, that board looks vaguely familiar. I dig it! Why didn’t you do a balsa deck?

For cloth of many different weights try www.thayercraft.com. I buy the 3 yard packs. Avoid the 2.74 oz. The tight weave won’t lap. Try 2.3 or 2.6.

Surfthis, I didn’t do a balsa deck because I felt that it would look funny to have the xps show on the rails only. Also it was my first try at doing balsa skins. The inspiration for this board came from the kissing fish Tim Bessell shapes. Yours look great…

Shifty, to post pics like this you need to use a picture hosting site. Then use the icon that looks like a mountain and insert the address the pic is stored at. The hosting site I use is called ImageShack. Good luck.

llilibel03, thanks for the info on the glass…

Raska23, Nice job! Fiber Glass Supply would be the place I would check for you fiberglass needs, Go to our website www.ProBoxfinsystems.com to the contact page and their contact information is there. Tell Mathrew or Pat the owners Larry from ProBox sent you and you are a Swaylockian and they will take special care of you. Mahalo,Larry

Larry, Thanks, I get all my glass from them. They just don’t carry 2oz. Glad to have gotten the first part of my order from you in time to install on this board.

How did the glass on the xps rails go? Mine gassed off on every lap, including the fill coats. No big deal as it’s waterproof. Happened to me on two boards with those rails. BTW, be sure and give us a ride report.

Didn’t have any problems with gassing on the rails. I don’t know why, I was definitely worried about it. I used RR epoxy and I did not seal the xps.

Hey Raska,

Your board looks great man!

I would be real interested to hear your thoughts on how it rides when your done with the inserts and get to ride it. I would have to think there was some interesting flex characteristics going on with balsa only on the bottom, as the top skin from my experience usually stifens up the whole board something wicked.

Good job mate!

Look forward to the ride report

So I took the board out to the cliffs tonight for it inagurial ride. Despite my fear that it had too much rocker it surfed great. Really feels like the best of both worlds. Catches waves like a fish, but surf like a shortboard. The quad setup is really fast. I was using fins with way too much area. I am still waiting on larry to send out my Probox quad fins. Despite this, it really surfed fast. Easy to make sections. For those of you that like to have a small fish in your templete I would definitely recommend this. I tried to post the template, but the adobe file is too big. Let me know if you would like to try it and I’ll gladly e-mail it too anyone. Would love to hear others opinions of this shape.

Raska

Your board looks great. Grew up surfing the cliffs in the 60’s. Could you send me your template.

Thanks
