I’m about to start 2 new builds, a 6’4 single fin and a 5’10 more performance-y twin and I’m sure to do build threads.
But before I start, I am left with some questions (again…).
With my first boards, I did glass-ons. With these, I’d like to put fin boxes in. I guess the single fin box is pretty straight forward with lots of info already on here. What bothers me a bit is the twin. I do have another board with futures, so I’d really like to stick with futures on the twin as well. The problem is though, that my board and fins are in France, where I won’t be before starting to work on the boards.
So my question is: Can I install those future boxes without that jig and without actual fins?
My first instinct is to say no you can’t but then again necessity is the mother of invention. If I absolutely had no other way I suppose I could very carefully with an exacto knife get the job done without a jig and then use a piece of wood instead of fins to set the cant.
Just mark your fin locations and to a post lam install. I know pro’s who prefer to do it this way, saying it is stronger. I don’t see the case for extra strength, but it should not be a big problem to post lam install. Can you avoid the fill coat before getting access to your boxes?
I am not sure if I understand “Can you avoid the fill coat before getting access to your boxes?” correctly. My board is ready, including all coats etc and has glass on fins.
So I’d grind the fins off, sand the area, mark the position for the boxes and proceed with what’s been described as the post-lam install. So I’d fill coat the whole area where I sanded (and sand it again for that matter).
Sid, I am getting lost here, ich bitte Verzeihung.
Are you saying:
You have some completed boards with glass-on fins in France, that you want to re-do with boxes as a new project, but you are still in Germany?
-One of those old ones is a single, another is a twin?
-That your Future fins are also in France?
-You are making two more new boards, in Germany, also a single and a twin, that will also have boxes, but you have no other Future fins in Germany?
Sorry for the confusion. I will build 2 boards, here in Germany. One of them will be a single fin, so that box install should be pretty straight forward/loads of info on here. The other one will be another fish with glass ons, so they can be disregarded here.
I also have a completed board here at home with glass on fins, which I’d like to replace with future boxes. I don’t have any fins here at home (they are actually in France) and I thought one might need the fins to properly install the boxes, hence my mentioning of them being in France.
Danke, alles klar. So you have everything at home except the one set of fins.
My understanding (not experience) is that Futures boxes are 0 degrees and the fins have built-in cant something around 6.5 degrees. If I have this wrong please post up.
A couple Youtube videos, one from Futures and one DIY post-glass:
Exactly, everything here except the fins. A buddy is a really gifted woodworker and has access to CNC stuff at his job. I’ll pay him a visit with a future box, maybe we can work something out and make a template on our own. If not, that video you posted is helpful (as well as other vids) and the link to the other thread as well.
Just a little update. I just cut off the fins and sanded the area flush. Gonna see a buddy, who is a carpenter and build a template for the futures boxes.
I’ll keep you posted, we’ll see if this works out or if ruin my board. I actually ordered 3 boxes, so I can surf it with a little stabilizer fin if I feel like it.
I sold a couple of blanks and FUtures boxes to a guy a couple of years ago who did it the hard way. Used a Stanley knife. Looked pretty good. Wouldn’t even know it at first glance.
