My first thruster and my first Hurley Twin fin. Huntington Beach 1981

The guy holding the twin fin is one of my best friends George Quigley. Brother of the late Ronnie Quigley who worked with Bob Hurley on some of the first Billibong designs and art.  Ronnie was also on the same NSSA team with Curren and in my opinion and equal surfer talent wise. Heck of a nice kid also.  George is a good surfer also. The red railed board is his. The pink Railed board was mine.  Bob shaped one of the best twin fins on the market back then. A good shaper.

Bob Hurley is one talented man who has proven shapers can make it. I’m stoked to see him at again. Even if it’s on a limited level. Talk about a man with a Vision.

Hi Solosurfer,

I was surfing around the web looking for information of Ronnie Quigley and I came upon your posting here.

I love seeing the pics that you posted you and george.  I went to school with Ronnie and he was my first love

from 5-8 grades.  I adored him.  I moved away when I was about to graduate 8th grade.  I moved back years

later 1 year too late to reconnect with Ronnie though.  I had met a girlfriend of his 1 year after his death and

she shared with me what happened.  I am sad that I never got to know him as an adult, his talents I could see

at a young age not only in surfing and art but as the man he would become.  He had a great soul that even at

the young age we were I could see.  I would love to see any photos of him as he grew to be a man or any art

designs that he created.  Do you have any clues that you could share with me on this?

Jen

Ron Quigley was so talented, as both a surfer, and an artist.  Too bad he died to what now seems so long ago.  i am sure that if he was around today he would be one of the leaders of the surfing industry.  I remember his FILO campaign for Oneill, and how stoked we were for him, “First in, Last out”; I guess God liked it so much he wanted him a bit closer, and working for him.

I spoke with George not too long ago. I used to have some of Ronnies art. Some of his original stuff. Zulu Surf club and some others, but my ex tossed out a bunch of my old stuff when we split.   I’ll ask George if he has any shots of Ronnie.  I have been wanting to do a write up on him.  He was one of the nicest kids I know. A true gentle soul. George was no slouch in the water either.  I always teased him about looking like Richard Gere.

I grew up with Robert Quigly the older brother of George and Ronnie.

In 1981 I as living on the North Shore so I guess I must of missed you solosurfer.

It was very tragic the day Ronnie died.

He was one of the best surfers in HB at the time of his death.

Such a good kid.

The photo’s of the HURLEY boards are cool.

Bob Hurley was one of the best shapers at the time.

THX!

I only met Robert a few times.  George called me the day it happened.  It was really sad and really shocking.  Hurley could definitely shape.  We might have met and you didn’t remember or something. There were so many folk in and out at that time. I used to date this cute little short haired punk girl that lived in Long Beach and lived with a couple of girls named Ronnie and Cheryl up Golden West. I mostly surfed North Side Huntington Pier and 44th street in Newport. Sometimes Salt Creek. Moved up north after that and lived there until 86 in shark infested freezing water and lumber jacks that surfed.

I moved back to California in 1982.

In 84 I lived on 21st street and Pecan.

Bought a house super cheap.

Was out of state and out of the country from 1988 to 1998.

Back in HB and most likely die here.

Haven’t seen the Quigleys in years.

I drive past Hurley on the way to the shop.

One thing about HB for better and for worse is it’s a collection of characters and a true Surf Town.  Like a big surfing experimentation pool. Lot’s of creative engergy, but also really hard to take as many live in Avatar world also.  Earthy folks have a hard time in a place like HB.

My kids and the crew are pretty down to earth actually.

It's kind of like eating fish!

Eat the meat spit out the bones.

I love HB.

Hi Jen,

My name is Stephanie Barthel and I am the daughter of Barb Quigley (Ronnie Quigley’s sister).

I saw that you had posted about him a while back requesting photos/information on him.  I myself am doing some research and hoping to compile some stories, photos, and information on Ron.  He was so very important to our family and my mother misses him dearly.

I thought I would check in with you and see if you came across anything during your search.

Thanks for posting such kind words about Ron!

Thank you,

Stephanie

1980 I met Hurley rider Chip Rowland  at a friends house at Rocky Point .

From what I understand his dad helped with aquiring the USA Billabong dist.

i did not know ron quigley.i do have one fond memory of him to share.i was surfing,i believe it was beach bl.,hb and he happened to be out.i knew who he was from the surf magazines.i was a good surfer but nowhere near his level of talent.i caught a good wave and was shocked, actually embarrased, when he came over to tell me how stoked he was on the wave i caught(he elaborated on how well he thought i surfed it).in my teenage years this was a very meaningful encouragement in my troubled life.in all my dealings with famous surfers it was almost always selfish, rude, arrogance.he was so humble and kind that this memory has stayed with me some 35 years later.the other night i was thinking about this and decided to look up what i could find on him.the postings i have read on this site confirm he was the kind person i believed he was.kind words will stay with you for a lifetime.God bless you,Ron.
