my home depot blank

I am doing the $14 blank and I am using the light spackle. I am wondering

how smooth I need to get it. I read in this forum that a bit of texture is good

for bonding with the resin. I have posted a close up picture of a rough part

of the blank and would be gratful if some one could let me know if this will

telegragh through the glass or if the glass will cover it up. I am a furniture maker by trade and you really have to get stuff nice and smooth before you hit it with lacquer. This will be my first time working with glass and resin.

Sorry, forgot the picture. Here it is.

Glass & resin cover a fair amount of texture, but you dont’ want anything loose that could create air pockets under the glass after it is laid down. When I was right at the step you’re at now, I used sanding screens (the kind drywall tapers use on swiveling extension hand sanders) because I could wrap them to the contours of my board. That way, you’re smoothing but not still shaping, if that makes any sense.

Good luck. Keep posting more pics as you go forward!

Thanks, after I read your reply I found some loose foam along the

glue joint. I have removed them and filled with spakle. I am going

to use the UV cure resin so that I can take my time with the cut laps.

I hope you a using epoxy and not poly resin.

I was going to paint the board with three coats of water based

paint, wait a week scuff up the paint and then use the UV cure poly.

resin. I hope the glass will stick to the scuffed up paint for one season.

I hope to learn to surf on this board and then make another board.

Here are some pics of the process so far.

Ok on the paint sealer. Just didn’t want your blank to melt. Thanks for the pictures. Cool.

Joe

hey all,

so your saying that you can seal eps with paint and then use poly safely? if so how long do you think do you think it might last? cheap boards sound good.

simon

Maybe you can use poly, just don’t ding it and expect to patch it with poly. Using poly sort of paints you into a corner.
