My morning surf check

~~Air temp 15* with a 30+ mph offshore wind.  Hoping the wind backs off a bit so it’s worth paddling out.

Haha, I used to think I was tough because I would flyfish for trout when it was in the teens. Ice would form in the guides every cast or so. Can’t imagine swimming in the water. Does the board ice up at all?

It was so cold in NJ after 4:00 pm today that I don’t even want to go in the hot tub.

The wind stayed hard offshore all day today.  It did improve as the day went on but not enough for me to ditch out of work early.  Hoping for leftovers tomorrow morning.  Its a good tide tomorrow so hoping there is still some swell.

No ice issues in the water but when its this cold there can be a pile up of ice at the water’s edge that can make getting to the water interesting.

I’m guessing that’s NC?

A few hundred miles to the North of there, it took a while to clean up. When it did, there were some bombs. The strong offshores (25-30mph) meant most drops were late and blind.

Meanwhile, anyone looking for something a tiny bit warmer but a whole lot bigger might want to head to Ireland or continental Western Europe.

The video is 1st street in Ocean City, New Jersey about 10:00 this morning.  Forget Ireland…Puerto Rico is setting up for a stretch of really good surf (and warm water).  Check out how these winds are setting up for Puerto Rico right now!!!  http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/1000hPa/orthographic=-59.82,31.68,1501

That’s a really cool map. Without a legend, it’s hard to tell what it represents. Is it isobaric pressure, or actual wind velocity/fetch?

My previous point was about the fact that W Europe is in for some massive surf, which may intrigue the more adventurous.

I don’t see anything on the fnmoc forecast for PR that even comes close.

Ha you went out today? I’m assuming it was absolutely frigid, especially when the winds picked up. I stayed inside and installed a leash plug, after shoveling mine and my neighbor’s driveways. It’s gonna get warmer for a bit I hope.

Edit: If you hit reply, do the posts come in uner the one you want to reply to now? Instead of at the bottom?

That map is current wind velocity.  Its one of my favorite tools for predicting surf.  Nothing enormous for PR…just a good run of long period swell.

Thought so. it’s really cool. Never seen that before. I like the interactive function. Saved to favorites.

I showed it to a friend and he said; “lay off the LSD” He doesn’t surf. Plus, he’s a drummer

Wonder what the airfare would be for Morocco?

Real fun surf this morning.

Couple of friends in those pics. We’ve had a good run of surf since Thanksgiving to make up for a dismal Hurricane season.

Apparently Cape Cod got the best out of this swell.

what wetsuit do you wear to surf when there’s snow on the beach?

I use a RipCurl E-Bomb 5.5 / 4.5, 7mm boots and 5mm mittens.  Toasty warm.  Last night before dark was brutal cold and I went up to shoot pics of my grom surfing after work and I really wished I was in my wetsuit in the water with a GoPro rather than on the beach with a telephoto.  Froze my ass off.

Never mind. The software on this site is sooo frustrating.
