Nice.
What are the dimensions (length & width).
I like the cork palm/hand pad. Screws for hand bindings?
Thanks! It’s 14" long by 7 3/4" wide. I put threaded inserts in so I could experiment with different handstraps. I pretty stoked on it. Its all scrap wood so I’ve only had to purchase the inserts and screws so far…
Nice…beautiful work!!
Spx
I also use the threaded bolts for securing the hand strap on my handplane. What are others thoughts on securing the strap?
Nice work Hobbs!
Leash plugs work to secure straps.
Hobbs, The plane looks great. I would be a little leery of trusting those inserts the way they are currently mounted. Although they might work just fine as is, they are intended to be used mounted on the opposite side of the board from the screw (bolt). The spikes that hold them in are really intended to resist spinning and not tension, its possible that under a sudden load that they could pull out…
As far as other methods of mounting, Using brass threaded inserts for wood is probably the best option,(Google images will give good examples of what I mean), they mount flush and are intended for use on the same side as the screw…
I would also think that since they are made of solid wood and they are relatively thick that it would be practical to use coarse threaded SS wood screws without any kind of insert. or you could maybe even use machine screws tapped directly into the wood (unless the plane is made from balsa).
The surface area of a hand plane is small so the force on the strap should easily be absorbed by 4 screws.

Dave,
Would this possibly allow the wood around the screws to soak up water?
Brass inserts sound good.
If water absorption is a concern you could run the screws in, pull them back out drop some sealer in the holes and put the screws back in, maybe take them out a few times as it is drying to keep them from being glued in by the sealer.
I have been using furniture hardware that is a metal female plug and male bolt. I set the female plug in resin, after taping the bottom of the plug to keep the resin from entering the hole in the plug. Then I use teflon plumbers tape around the threads of the male bolt, in case the resin gets on the bolt, so it wont dry in place before I can get the strap fitted.
Leash plugs would work althought they are fairly deep comlpicating the placement.
I work with agave, which can be considered like wood. Mixing metal and wood is not ideal for sanding flush.
Still looking for a better way.
I’ve done something similar to the method that you described, it works pretty well.
I’ve never dealt with agave but I would imagine that it is a relatively soft wood and wouldn’t hold threads or screws well anyway.
For sanding flush have you tried setting the metal insert a little past flush and sanding the agave down to it using a rigid sanding block?
Yeah, I put the plug in a mm below the surface. Its ok.
Have you seen any nice straps on the market or do yo DIY?
Agave is like a sponge, so it grabs but does not hold. Glass and resin make it like any other board. Agave is in fact a plant, the flower stalk of the plant. In reality, it is not wood but xylem and phloem. Get your hands on some if you like shaping wood, this material will make you flip and join the PHLOEM revolution.
Very cool!
I see some sentry plants growing on the dune in my area they throw a stalk about twenty feet or so into the air when reproducing.
They probably aren’t agave but might have the same properties. I’d probably get into a lot of trouble if I tried to cut any of those down.
I usually go the DIY route and use nylon strap for the handstraps but I have had some adjustable velcro straps made at a local upholstery shop in the past, they were a little pricey though. I don’t know of any commercially available but there may be some.
