My Two Year Old Bamboo Skinner

Howdy gents,

A couple few years ago I recall somewhere in the various compsand discussions someone famous said “1.5 eps is no man’s land”. But I happen to have some and figured the skins just have to be tweaked. I found some bamboo veneer online and built this one. Wifey said it was pretty so now it hangs on the wall. Ive built a couple of these since. Thanks for looking.

oh well, cant post pics or find my old posts with pics either.

So how do/did they ride & hold up?

I remember you posting pics ages ago of one and being over the difficulties of the compsand approach.

I’ve had a few 1.5# boards with a lot of glass on them and they’ve ridden well and held up extremely well. I can imagine replacing a layer or two of glass with veneer will only improve the ride/durability of the whole thing.

Aww

I’ll just go ahead say it…

Dave, you and Mark are the true geniuses here once people can get past all the self promo stuff

even though most don’t seem to understand it

they should pay attention…

important stuff

I’d like to add Paul Jensen and Greg Tate to the G list … along with Gary Young

Thanks but no way not me Bernie. More like tech-rebel without a cause. I think GregL is extremely innovative with a really good cause. Gary Y is the geneous. I’ll see if I can setup a photobucket.

As far as durability, Im not good at that cuz I dont surf heaps and have a large quiver. One of them didnt surf good at all but that was mostly design error on my part. Experimental board and pushed some limits too far. That one was blue xps core with veneer. It had lots of glass and felt very stiff. Boards that are really stiff dont feel good IMO, no matter the construction. But that doesnt mean you cant have a great board that is stiff. Too much flex is not great either. I could fix that one with some motivation, but motivation is low. Im more motivated to be ‘craftee’ again this change over is got me all verklempt…

Yeah compsand is a pain but its kinda hard to stop :frowning:

oh btw, I shape the eps core, hand glass the first layer. vac the veneer, blend the edge, art, then glass the final layer. not sure this is a good approach but i do know sanding bamboo isnt easy. gotta say tho its tough and beautiful…so how bad can it be?

Nothing wrong with that. T-flex is meant to be efficent in production as well as garage. So is WMD. But I’ve used other methods that I liked too. Whatever works for you. The finished product is what counts … cosmetics, durability, performance.

Hey meecrafty, quickest way of posting images is to click ‘file attachments’ at the bottom of the editor. Any images you attach will automatically be displayed in your post. Or if they’re hosted somewhere else, then click the ‘tree’ icon at the top of the editor and insert the url/filepath.

This has nothin to do with the topic at hand but your motto that you created is if f@#@ awesome.I told my wife and she was laughin.I have seen craftees experimental boards and he has a lot and they are very innovative for sure. The dude has some mad skills when it comes to alternative materials being used for surfboard construction. He has taught me plenty about how the design of a board along with materials effects the way a board may ride.He surfs preety damn good to so he can test what he makes.

Hey craftee, good to see you back. That board you can’t post pics of (if you guys can’t get pics up I’ll NEVER figure it out) is the one with the bamboo leaf on it, right? I remember making some smart comment about your choice of vegetation when you posted it the first time.

all of a sudden i remember that board too

it did appeal to my senses, being a dutchi and all.

but then it wasnt THAT leaf, right?

Crafty, I did a 6’3" in 1 lb. with CF rails. It rides great. The only issue is I banged the rail with my shin and the CF held but the foam didn’t. Now I have a decent delam/separation under the glass in that spot. Then Greg comes out with the high density rail blank stuff. Sheesh. I’ve got an attic full of 15 or so different pulled blanks now. I’m going to keep building them out and then migrate to Greg’s stuff.

What’s up Mike. The one with the leaf u saw is the one that didnt ride so good. I’ll fix it some day.

Sine, yeah tried that w/o success.

Pompano, solid rails is really good, we can thank Gary Y, Bert and Greg for that.

Well surfercross, you wouldnt know you got the one chick that seems like a normal human being.

Ok then, first post as ‘Crafty’…looks like Im a newbie all over again.

Ok new user name, new photobucket account. Hopefully this will work.

Sweet dude
