Narrow fin box?

Greetings to all,
First time post after ‘browsing’ the knowledge on here. I have a question I hope some light can be shed on -
Were there narrower fin boxes when this board was built? I’ve assumed late seventies…looks original, but about 1mm 3/64 narrower than any fin I have.
Any help appreciated.

When I get a tight fin box, I make a few passes with my small vixen file the box until my fin can fit. It’s not a big deal.

Yep, that would probably do it. After some closer inspection it looks like the box tapers slighty, thanks.

The taper is because the separate spacer was not used when the box was installed. Later versions of the box had a sandable spacer in the top center of the box, which stabilized the box during the cure of the resin, and was removed during sanding.

I thought that a lot of center fin boxes were set in and glassed to have a slight concavity in the middle to provide a better “grip” on the fin.
So, you’re telling me that some of these older boards I have with this feature just were the result of glassing without a spacer in the box??? Yikes!
