Something some of you might find interesting. Seems a video has been made documenting the travels of these two surf explorers. They had come in off the road before I got into surfing, so except for the odd photo or quote from an article in the current mags I missed out on following their adventures. Before surf camps and boat trips on luxy yachts these guys from what I know were the real deal. I ordered my copy today and will post up a review whenever it finally arrives. The true essence of what we all dream I think. Lest I do, just going somewhere and finding a decent wave. Man I am stoked just thinking about it!!! Can’t wait to hear their stories its going to be great! ps. Tom check for typos http://www.thefarshore.com
Ed: This does look interesting. I doubt we will see it in theatres down here. (Dog Town barely made it). Looks like they are doing pre-sale orders for the video, any idea when they will release it? It was the Surfer Magazine chronicles written by Naughton and Peterson that lit the fire under many people wanting to find uncrowded surf in exotic places. I remember the magazine covers vividly, expecially one with the view from inside the pup tent looking out to the lineup at Petacalco. I hopped on a bus at the Mexican border that same summer and kept going back for 10+ years. My son is almost the same age I was when my Dad let me take my first road trip to Mexico, 15 years old. Might be time he and I get down there alone for a guys only surf trip and see what we can find. I opened my e-mail this morning while writing this reply and found a couple of photos from a friend. They took a family road trip to Mexico, driving to the Pacific Coast. There were three families and total of 5 groms aged 10-16 years old plus three of the dads who surfed. They were staying in a highrise resort area on the Central Pacific coast of Mexico and got mediocre surf near the hotel. Midweek they hooked up with a guy with a charter boat that gave them a package deal to take them around the point to search out some decent surf. This was 10 days ago as that last big storm churned back out to the West off Mexico. They got 3 solid days of overhead conditions with just their crew in the lineup. I’m ready to revisit some of those old abandoned mines that may have been forgotten years ago, anyone want to meet in Guadalajara in early Fall? WOOOOHOOOOOO TOM, yeah that is a sweet wave. I have always wanted to do a drive down to the Pac side of Mex. If you remember I hit you up for some tips on just that late last year. I saved those emails and put them in my surf folder. As for the video, They sent me an email last week saying it was available now with delivery 4-6 weeks. My money order is in the mail now. What time frame do you have in mind for that Mex trip? I have a buddy that just moved to Samoa and plans are in the works for a trip there next year, but thats NEXT year! Your son is one lucky grom!! Spent a week down in the PV area last year. Didn’t score any surf like the photo though. Caught a few fun days and got a taste of the area. Really like the vibe down there, we had a good trip.

Tom check for typos If you want to read a review with some background prior to ordering, give this a shot: http://www.vagabondsurf.com/TheFarShore.html Initial plans were to have the video in shops as well - you might find out more from their website (email Greg Schell). If you read the articles I can’t see how you wouldn’t love the video. If you can get kids to sit still to watch it, they ought to have their minds blown. It isn’t surf vehicle specific - it’s really a universal movie. Think of a bit of a cross between Endless Summer and Innermost Limits and Morning Of The Earth… After watching it I came across a recent SURFER article in which (paraphrased) the writer mused about a group of pros who “gave up creature comforts for two weeks to live in a motorhome and travel the California coast”. Ha ha ha ha ha hah…! Nels http://www.vagabondsurf.com/TheFarShore.html

I lived down there for 6 weeks in ‘74, those memories are pricless. Something only shared with the over 45 yr old group though i guess. I reality, I came back weighing only 129lbs with 2 1/2’ of bleached blond hair, a thousand jungle bug bites(no see-ums), no money, the worst stomach(turista’s)ever, and stories that would make my parents shit their polyester pants!!! Would i go again??? Hell no, their’s no toilet paper or TV!!!..just kidding
;-0 This vid will not disappoint…Peta footage included along with thoughtful examination of “The Cone Of Silence” (my term) as applied to surf discoveries. http://www.vagabondsurf.com/TheFarShore.html
