Hi guys,
Classes are starting, and there are more seats than butts.
Terry has thousands of dollars worth of carbon fiber, and other materials which are yours to use…Free. All it takes is registering for class. As I said before, by attending only part of the classes you’ll be way ahead on your understanding of composite construction. He asked me to post this for him…
Cerritos College Supports Surfboard-Building
WHAT: The Cerritos College Plastics Department is holding a variety of classes related to surfboard building and skills for independent projects.
As a result of the overwhelming turnout at the last surfboard construction forum on Dec. 17th, the Plastics department has opened its doors to all who are interested in using the 20,000 sq. foot lab for their own projects.
Anyone who is interested can select a convenient time and day to attend a class. The following are classes that are related to common projects and surfboard builders.
Monday 6-10pm “Plastics”
This class covers the basics about thermoplastics including plastic identification and fabrication with “hands-On” instruction and projects.
Tuesday 6-10pm “Fiberglass I”
Methods of laminating, reinforcements and finishing are covered with safety in mind using all the facilities related to fundamental skills in handling resins and reinforcements. Hot wire foam cutting will be done in this section as well.
Wednesday 6-10pm “Composites Fabrication”
Beginning with wet laminating, vacuum bagging, infusion and Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) methods, the class will also focus on reinforcements of fiberglass, graphite and Kevlar. Core materials are covered and used including foam and honeycomb types. Projects include everyone making a $100.00 clipboard out of prepreg graphite/epoxy for free.
Thursday 6-10pm “Tooling”
This covers all aspects of moldmaking, preparation, masters, splashes and the proper materials for both room temperature and high-temp. projects. This is ideal for those who realize they need to develop a form to reproduce multiple objects of their own design in plastics and composites.
Saturday 9am-1pm “Fiberglass II”
This unique class offers many the advanced opportunity to develop their projects from “one-off” to multiple production parts. Foam cores an be hot wire cut, shaped and laminated in sanding/grinding and laminating booths. Resins include polyester and epoxy and reinforcements include fiberglass and graphite fabrics. Students can use materials provided by the department to experiment with or bring in their own supplies for their projects.
To take advantage of this opportunity, those interested should plan on coming in to the Saturday class (Jan. 14th) at 9am to get answers about which section will best suit their needs best without wasting any more time working in a cramped garage, smelling up the house or irritating neighbors.
Currently there are no extra fees for using the facilities if you are a registered student attending classes. Often time’s materials are provided “Free” to those who are learning to use these expensive materials. This is a plus, as students can apply the knowledge learned in class to their projects without wasting their own materials due-to-the-fact that they didn’t just read about how to perform the fabricating methods, but practiced it first.
Fortunately, there are providers of expandable polystyrene (EPS) blanks that are willing to supply cut-offs for students to practice on with epoxy resin which is a more environmentally friendly (AQMD compliant) method of surfboard construction.
