Need a quick answer on how much resin for a 9'8"

About to mix the resin with the pigment, and I want to be sure I mix enough all at once to keep a uniform color on top and bottom of board. Board is a 9’8" stepdeck. I like to err on the side of having WAAY to much leftover resin than running out, so…? Would 5 Qts do? I bought 3 5 qt buckets…Thanks.

It depends on how much glass you use.

2 oz per foot of board length, per 6-8 oz of glass cloth, per side. So, like, the 2 oz per foot works for double 4 or single 6 or 8, but double 6, or 10 oz volan needs more, like maybe 3 oz per foot of board length…

I think that’s a Parmenter rule of thumb. Its in the archives somewhere.

Assuming that you’re using single layers of 6oz top and bottom (then maybe additional layers will follow, but they will be clear ones) I would say 5 Qts should be enough but I don’t know how much glassing experience you have.

I’m just like you, I prefer too much than not enough. Buy another 2.5 Qts, mix 6. You will likely have too much, but you will relax more while glassing. And you will have 1.5 Qts left for that clear layer on deck.

Besides, it also depends upon cutlap widths. Have fun.

I just glassed a 9’2" longboard, and I feel the same way-I wanna have enough, and some extra, in case I screw something up. My board is single 6 on the bottom (a little more than a quart), and double 4 on the deck (about a quart and a half), and I am really messy, plus I had some left over both times. I would say mix up about 4 to 4 1/2 quarts(porbably 4 1/2 if your messy like me) if you are glassing it heavy like 8X8-8 or 8X6-8.

Thanks for the replies…I couldn’t wait though  I mixed 7Qts total so the color would be uniform. Catalyzed 2 1/2 quarts for a single 6oz.bottom and had more than enough. The rest is in an airtight bucket for the double 6oz. deck. I love doing solid resin tints. Was looking for a “pea green” color, and it ended up FULL BLOWN watermelon green…LOL. Looks killer though, I’m happy. Wrapping the laps around the step deck was a little tricky though…

Tenover, I am afraid that if you laminate a double 6 on the deck with tinted resin, the color will be somewhat darker than the one on the bottom.

I would do one tinted layer first, then another clear one.

Already done, came out perfect…I’ll post pics later.

7 quartsssssss

HOLY SHIT MAN!

WAY TO MUCH

You should be able to glass two 9’8ers with that much resin.

For an opaque tint I would have probably mixed a full gallon… even then that’s a little much.

Here’s a not so subtle tip, If you warm the resin up prior to lamming and it will flow better and you’ll use less.

Damn that’s a lot of resin.

Also, test man test. Set aside a bunch of small 2" squares of the sme cloth that your using for the board and test them on a scrap piece o faom till you get what you want.

But hey, waht’s done is done.

So lets see some pics!!!
