I need a good set of dimensions for a 4’8 retro fish I am going to have shaped. The board is for me. I weigh 135, and I’m 5’4. I ride my 4’10 quad in anything under DOH. After that I go HPSB
I’m having a local shaper shape the board for me and I’m anxious because I don’t want my first ever custom twin fin to leave a bad taste in my mouth.
I have faith in my shaper but his response to my concerns about fin size and placement were, “Futures has a big fin selection.” I did NOT like that answer.
Does anyone have suggestions on what I should do. I want to shape it myself but my housing situation won’t allow it. Any thoughts would be great.
Whats wrong with fin boxes such as futures? Or was it just how he answered you?
I recommend going to a local surf store or used surf shop and looking at similar boards and measure how far the fins are from the tail and how offset they are from either the rail or stringer. You will likely find that most of the fins, from board to board, are all set at about the same distances. Fin placement has all but been mastered. Most of the old farts on here will disagree but seriously, go look at 20 or so boards that you are describing, the fins will all be in just about the same place in most of them. Of course there will be outliers, but for the most part fin placement has been experimented with so much so that its not a guessing game anymore.
Geppies from True Ames. Line the rear edges up with the top of the crack and the tips. Straight up, no cant. But, if you’re a hpsb kind of guy you might go with what your shaper said. Gives you some options and experimentation. Mike
You want to shape it yourself ( I would assume that means you know what you want) , yet you do not know what to tell the shaper what you want BUT you know that you don’t like what he had to say?
Sounds a bit confusing.
Where are you located? There are a lot of guys who have the fish dialed in. Most aren’t gonna give you a bro deal but they will give you options and insight.
