Need Board Rental on Oahu

One of my surf buddies is traveling on business to Oahu in a couple weeks. He’s hoping to get enough free time to get in the water.

Any recommendations on where he can rent a board? They’re staying in Waikiki.

Thanks.

There are lots of places to rent boards in Waikiki. I don’t surf there much any more, but the last I was there the “beach boys” still rented boards right on the beach. Probably the highest prices on the island though. How good a surfer are your friends? How long will they be staying? The North Shore is the place to be this time of year or even the Windward side if theres no wind. There are a couple places to rent boards in Haleiwa or Kailua if they want to head away from the normal crowd, and if they’re staying long enough they can save a couple bucks by renting it away from Waikiki and taking it for the week.

Try Blue Planet Surf on Kapahulu Ave (near Waikiki). They have decent boards and weekly rates. They have a website too.

Finding rental boards in Waikiki is as easy as finding plastic surgeons in OC. They are all over the place. There’s a little place on Koa Street - I think it’s called Koa Surfboards - that has a nice variety of surfable boards. They’ll cut you a deal if you rent for more than a day or two.

Tell your friend to settle into his hotel, then find a place nearby. You can rent from the Beachboys on the sand, and there are countless rental places around town.

Hey Bill

you have the big alternator?

I can’t seem to find it any where.

I went up the entire southcoast to LA monday and only saw the flexfires and the other designs…

$800-$850 at SurfRide for that FW fish you rode at pipe.

My jaw was hanging The Merrick Hydroepics and Avisos were all over $1000 for a 6’2" potato chip

probably could get a Brewer/Reeves custom shortboard for that price here.

Ryan:

Try the Surf Garage, a block from Waikiki. http://www.surfgarage.com/surfboard_rentals.html. I go several times a yr and have had good luck with these guys.

Mahalo!

The Demo boards I have are mostly custom ones for pros that are in the FlexFire style. I have about 7 demo models ranging from 6’1" to 7’6".

6’1" Available

6’2" Available

6’4" Available

6’6" Available

? currently in the Pipe Contest

? K currently in the Pipe Contest

7’6" currently in the Pipe Contest

I will have stock boards within a couple of weeks maybe sooner. Among them I will have some Alternators. Customers are already purchasing models, site unseen, so if you think you might be interested in one it might be a good idea to lock one up.

If you call Marvin at my shop 808-637-7797 he has the list of boards that are coming and he can tell you if the model you or anyone else is interested in, will be available.

For sure the FireWire’s are not cheap but so far everyone has had a positive reaction to them both price and performance. It is pretty remarkable really!

Considering how long they will last and the exceptional performance most people are ok with the price… Plus they are just so hard to get that many people are even willing to pay extra just to get their hands on one.

As you have noticed, this is all emerging as a whole new price model for these “new” kinds of surfboards.

probably could get a Brewer/Reeves custom shortboard for that price here.

I understand your comparison! The FireWires are also more costly then my smaller handmade custom boards! And I personally do every step of the construction myself… right here in my shop in Haleiwa! But as good as that can make them, these new boards are a whole different animal and are priced accordingly. So far it seems in accord with peoples exectations.

Come out and check out the boards, it would be good to see you again. I’ll buy you lunch at Cholo’s!

Sounds like a good deal. Ha Ha. I’d like to give one of those firewires a try.

[=Blue]… Well… What are you waiting for!

Wow! What a great outpouring of advice. I’ll pass it along. With all this info I’m sure he’ll be able to find something that works for him. Thanks a lot.

Bill, thanks for the offer on the demos but Vince is a big guy. At about 6-4 and 250 I don’t think those shortboards are what he’ll be looking for.

Thanks again to everyone.

Blue Planet Hawaii is near Waikiki, and they have a pretty good selection of Boardworks epoxies. Better to go to a shop nearby then renting a board from the beachboys.
