NEED HELP BUYING BOARD!!!

Hi,

I am new to surfing and am in the market for purchasing a board. Here is a craigslists ad (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/spo/701489591.html) that the guy will sell me everything for $325. It seems like a great deal, but I know nothing about surfing for the most part. Any advice on this purchase or what companies I should be looking at will GREATLY be appreciated.

Thanks!!!

not having looked at the ad, but having seen and taken out a lot of beginners…

first thing you have to do to surf, other than drive to the ocean, is paddle out. Next you sit there. Then you try catch what looks like a wave.

To do this, you need a board that paddles well for your size. For the average person, say 5’8" tall, 150 pounds, I’d like to say get something about 8’6" long and 22" wide. Lots of people will flame this, but in the beginning you have to make it easy for yourself.

I suggest you can find a decent mid-length (as above) not too used, for maybe 200 bucks. There should be no egregious dings. The deck at 1/3 up from the tail should not be caved in or starting to. This is frequently a weak point. You’ll have to learn how to fix dings, but that is all covered on this list, use the search function.

It would really help if you had someone to surf with, and to show you how ding repair is done.

the rest of it (wetsuit, board bag, and whatever glam stuff you might at some time acquire) is largely a marketing-driven humbug.

Good sound suggestion.

Try a surf school first. Might save your life at the same time.

Not sure what that thing goes for new but price looks good to me
