Need help identifying this board

My grandmother bought this surfboard in 1977. She thought it was a nose rider but we can’t find anything online that’s like this board with this logo. It was purchased in Dana Point and we would like help identifying it.

It looks like a forerunner of a Peter Pan Slug

I think that has more meat in the nose than the usual slug model. Maybe custom for a beefier individual? I think Hobie started selling the Peter Pan Slug around late eighties.

I think they started producing the “Slug” before that. I could no doubt be wrong, I’m thinking 70’s.

It is certainly a Slug, without the standard “Pan” lam. They came along in the mid 70s, as I recall. Panagiotis wanted a board to ride in local contests that would fit the rule for maximum size in the “shortboard” division. So he came up with a design that had as much volume as he could squeeze into the maximum length. He had been riding longboards in the open division and people complained about his advantage for wave catching. So they set a max length and created a separate longboard division of its own.

Did he win?

I don’t know. I pay very little attention to surf contests. Just about none, in fact.

Thank you! Do you know anything about the signature “Hobie Power” ?

Hobie Power was a slogan they used in their ad campaigns for a little while. It is not a signature, just a catch phrase.
