It’s really nothing fancy at all, I just can’t seem to grasp the concept…Looking at glassing a 9’8" noserider with poly resin. Basically, I want the entire board to be an almost opaque light blue/“ice” color, but I want to have the tip and tail colored gray. Should I:
A.) Paint the foam with paint before doing any glassing and then glass clear?
B.) Paint the board with resin before doing any glassing and then glass clear?
C.) Do all the color work at once with tinted resin? If so, how do I get the color seperation without any muddying between the blue and gray? I don’t even really want a straight line, I just want the lines to be fairly crisp, without the colors mixing at the line…
D.) Glass the entire board with a light blue tint and then paint the gray on over the cured lamination before hotcoat (paint? resin?)
Any of the above, I guess, its whatever suits you. Theres a thread on tints that's been running for 4 years now, and still going http://www2.swaylocks.com/node/1025644
Also, lots of threads on painting too, just use the search feature.
To get what you're describing, I would use tint for the middle, opaque for the ends. Separate squeegees, and always work the resin awayfrom the line where the two colors meet.
Tenover---------------A and D; with exception that on D do not paint the laminate, paint your accents on the sanded hotcoat. When you gloss be careful not to sand thru on your painted accents while doing your wet and dry/rub out/polish. A------- is the simplest option. There are a couple of other ways to do it with a tint and or opaque. Depends on the effect you are after and how much risk you are willing to take .
