on occasion i am getting a flat spot in my rocker (usually 4 to 6 ins) before the apex of the rocker where it blends into the flat. it doesnt happen on all my boards, but on about 1 out of 3. i cant figure out what i am doing wrong. anybody have any ideas on how i can address this ??
er…taking too much from one place and not enough from another? Power planer or hand? If it’s a power planer its probably technique with depth of cut. Practice makes perfect.
Here’s a way to keep track of things as you shape the bottom. Using a 2’ or 3’ carpenter’s level, lay it along the stringer (or whatever part you are taking down) and rock it along the bottom. As long as it rocks easy, you have a curve going on. If it sticks, there will be a flat at that spot and you can fix it before it gets too big.
All you can do is take a little off at a time and keep measuring. Eventually, your planing technique will improve as well as your “eye” so you won’t need to measure as often.
