neighbor wants to shut me down

One of my neighbors turned me in to code enforcement for glassing in my garage, I live in Southern California. Do I have any rights to practice a hobby in my garage, or am I just screwed.

Peace delayney

check the archives for epoxy resin use. No stinky…

Option #1: check local law, ask to see zoning codes. there should be some laws to protect hobbyists. Also, if you have never sold a single board and they are all for private use, then that gives you some ammunition. there is 1 big problem though, it the handling of toxic materials in residential areas. epoxy should get around the toxicity issues.

Option #2: move

Option #3: ask your neighbor what is problem is…seems like hes just one of those “dicks”. but, if hes concerned about breathing in fumes, switch to epoxy and prove to him it wont eat away his brain.

Option #4: continue glassing with garage door down and using epoxy (USE RESPIRATOR) and if he ever comes your way to spy on you, recite to him tresspassing laws / Invasion of privacy.

If it is a hobby, it is probably no more illegal than painting your walls or making a model aeroplane kit. If you are a commercial enterprise, hide all signs of it~!

Epoxy ~!

Barrell Planer ~!

find me the code that you’re being cited for and i’ll see what i can dig up for you. i’m in law school, so i get free access to LexisNexis and WestLaw databases.

epoxy is probably your best bet, there is little to no smell at all when you glass with it. i know and can understand where your neighbor comes from when he doesnt want to deal with the smell. but in all reality you probably glass a few times a year and the smell is around for 20 minutes. so hes just being an old fart with nothing better to do then ruining everyone elses fun. chances are this guy is old/retired and has nothing better to do with his time.

i would use epoxy, close the garage and tell him that your getting glassed somewhere else. he shouldnt be able to tell.

A pissed off meighbor can be a problem since most of the chemical aren’t sanctioned for residential use…

I’d try to work something out and at least switch to epoxy…

Could end up to be a nightmare is you can come to terms.

yeah, I had a neighbor scream at me once…he actually said that I was sanding the same board for 3 months now…haha…he didn’t know my roomate and I were working on boards…Anyways, we settled it by me comming over discussing the problem and giving him some of my homebrews…so my advice would be to talk to him and compromise. see his side and explain your side…then open up a cold one.

Things that helped me out alot was: switching to epoxy & sanding during business hours as everybody was at work.

Rio

Offer to build him or her a board. Mike

You can glass in your garage. Tell him to F-off, then kick his dog.

VOC release in commercial neighborhoods in California is a serious business. If your neighbor has some activism in him and he calls the right people you’ll be in trouble. If you are renting you will be evicted. If you own you will pay a big fine.

Epoxy VOCs fall well within legal limits (for RR epoxy), use it instead if you cannot ventilate well enough and you need to use large volumes (like to glass a board or more at a time).

Resinhead- Are you positive about that? I’m ready to glass, and still haven’t decided on eopxy or poly, and this thread is making me very nervous!

why would you want to trash your neighbors? They just want to live w/o the toxic smell and dust. Do the right thing.

Howzit E-pacman, My neighbors are so cool about my board building that when the Konas blow, the fumes flow towards their house and they ask me if I’m OK since they can smell it. When the trades blow which is most of the time the fumes blow into the pasture behind my house and nobody even knows what’s going on in the shop. I think the fact that surfing is considered our state sport most local families don’t get upset, they just want to know how much for a board. You’ve seen my shop and know it pure back yard with no frills but still very functional.Aloha,Kokua

man, that makes me realize how lucky I am. My “shop” is outside the bedroom window of an 85 year old lady. She’s cool with it. I checked first. She can’t even hear the sander. She goes to bed late and I work at nights on the boards. Plus I’m using epoxy. I’ve often thought what will happen when someone else moves in.

I just can’t start work before 10 am on saturday… I’m surfing then anyway…

good luck with the neighbors… i imagine it can be a real bummer. I have a plan B if the neighbor, uh, moves on …

I’m not sure if my friend Ed was pullin my leg or not, but he said that he had a neighbor that was a nurse that didn’t like the smell of his glassing, and he put some pine sol in the resin and said it madt the place smell like a hospital… maybe he was just yankin me around?.. danny

I reckon he was man…

I’d hesitate to add anything to resin!

Ben there done that , Ignore the un believer for they shall be smite from the earth, and when the meek inherit the earth the can wear the resin stech as they probably don’t surf.

I’d try to talk to them first.

I that doesn’t work, then a switch to epoxy would solve all your problems except for the fact that your now glassign wih epoxy.

On a related note, if you need someting to cover up the smell, thre’s a prodcut called Tri-flow teflon oil for bikes. Smells actually quite good and belive it or not, overpowers poly resin to a decent degree.

You can do it. Some boat builders have put vanilla extract in the resin to hide the smell. It works to some degree.
