I will be venting this one most likely epoxying a nut in and a cap screw. Yes the black getting hot is a little worry the deck will be covered by timber so hopefully not an issue when its in the water. Supose I will just have to remember not to leave it in the sun.
Cleaned up the outline and the lumps from my dodgy hotwireing. Nothing exciteing but the black dust goes everywhere so a hold while I finish glassing another.
semi related fill coated deck and set the box in the other board over the weekend did the bottom tonite 6'4 single not sure on fin yet don't really have anything suitable. Any suggestions? It will surfed in head high beach break mostly. Had though of maybe a bonzer fin.
A bonzer set up would be cool. Personally not into riding bonzers at beach breaks though. Looks like it has pretty flat rocker. You could always drop in a quad set up and then put the single fin box in there so you could ride it multiple ways. Either way, that board is looking pretty fun. What's the art towards the tail?
I ment the bonzer main fin on its own. Think the angle makes it look flatter than it is. Around 5 nose just over 2 tail.
The art is fabric tail patch extra knee reinforcement and hides where I plugged the holes from foot strap inserts as the blank is from an old winsurfer
Theres a couple of little drips to sand around the tail and the tape seam on the rail maybe, then drill the hole for the leash cord. Hopefully some clean surf later in the week to test it out.
thanks Ben not sure how it would go as a bonzer rails are pretty soft with a rolled v through most of the bottom maybe after abit of playing as a straight single. Had it out in soft chest to head high feels good so far real effortless to surf.
Roughed out the eps board last nite an hour with a long block and some 40grit. nice to be able to shape without pissing off any one with the noise. The black is bit of a pain to shape side lights don't show much, and its vey flexy. Its a lot thinner and more rockerd out than what I would usually surf. I have no idea how it will go part of the fun I suppose.
Cut out and fitted some pu inserts for the fin plugs.
Also made up the deck skin had an old blind in the shed not sure what timber it is a lot of tape and some triming with the block plane.
Board is now hotcoated top and bottom and fitted fin plugs this arvo.
There have been a series of screw ups and things not going to plan.
Mainly related to me not having a proper build plan. I think the next one I build will involve a list of steps and a lam schedule. Decided before I start.
It needs another fill coat on the deck to catch a few pin holes.
I put a little yellow in the deck lam to try bring out a bit more colour in the timber its seems to have worked and as a bonus it gives the carbon an interesting golden glow in the sun.
Finaly got the board in the water today surf was pretty horrid lumpy, crossed up 4-5ft with a stiff onshore. But it was the only chance I’ve had to get out for a few weeks. Seems fast and skatey holds plenty of speed through the fat sections, Feels light and I’m liking the thiner rails. Really need to have a go in some better surf to get a proper idea.
Last nite I sanded the edge in the tail then hosed it off and sat it on the deck to dry. Intending to put it away in the shed later on I forgot all about it until I was driveing home from work it was pretty hot today so I spent the drive wondering where it would have delamed as I havn’t fitted a vent yet black rails 1lb eps core and its been baking all afternoon. I got home went and picked it up and no delam at all stoked. maybe I’l just skip the vent.
Have started on a 5’10 fish as base to put into practice what I learned from this build.
