Doing the channels wit veneer was trick. I plotted the location, made a cut. For some reason after I made the cuts one of the “panels” shifted. It was like their had been tension in the wood that was released by cutting. When I bagged the veneer in place I just pulled it over and taped it in place.
My only complaint was that I painted the foam on the sides of the channels and unfortunately the paint shows through the veneer. I bookmatched the veneer and you will notice the heart and sap wood are reversed on the deck and bottom. I think if I would have used the deck veneer on the bottom, with the darker sap wood over the channels, I would not have had the problem.
I left myself a lot of options for fin setups but am most anxious to try the twin keels as the inspiration for the board was Torren Martyn’s midlengths with the Rasta fins.
oops photos on another computer. I don’t want to type all this out again so photos to come soon…
I decided I wanted a short board feel so I sanded to 400. The 400 finish feels much nicer in the hand than a gloss finish too. It does make the black slightly gray but I’m OK with that. I’ve found black rails really show snackles (do people still call them that?)
Hi Tom. Hope you’re staying dry up on the Central Coast. It looks like you’ve been hammered with rain this year.
Hi Jeff - Beautiful as always! I’ve always loved your eye for bookmatching the light and dark woods in a way that ‘fits’ the shape. No exception here on that! The dark edges of the channels is a nice touch too…
The fish is a Barracuda. I find the fish I put one my boards on a site called “Panteek” that sells antique prints.I stumbled on the site while researching about an artist named Ernst Haeckel. Check his work out, espeically his jelly fish prints.
This print was a Barracuda. On the print was the scientific name and when I decided to google the scientific name and it came up as a “Mediterrenean Barracuda.” Well, I hope it likes the Pacific.
I tried it in some inconsistant mushy waves today and it was “Flowy.” I’ve never ridden a board with twin keel fins and it felt kind of slow to react but very smooth. I guess that’s to be expected? I will wait for better waves before giving any real judgement. I still have the twinzer and thruster modes to try…
