new design

http://www.swellnet.com.au/news/3153-dan-thomson-waking-to-a-better-shape

i will be surprised if the very near future dosent go somewhere very close to this guys ideas.

i was standing on boogs 16 years ago. i claimed a new design was only a few years away. all i did was imagine and sketch a few ideas.

i saw the alaias come into vogue. it brought a tear to my eye imagining what was possible. i talked up my finless intentions,(somthing like a slightly narrower & longer boog) but never shaped one…

i am about to shape another 6´1’’ rounded pin.  2’’ shorter, 1/8th thicker and 1/2’’ wider then what the 90s dictated.

props to the doers out there!

i guess $s and laziness are in equal parts my excuse…

Then you'll probably like the Bing Speed Square!

Hey Mick thanks for posting up the link!

I think Tomo deserves credit for working hard to refine his shaping direction, and to get exposure via bigger names in the surf industry.  Tomo is an accomplished surfer himself, and took the lead in performance surfing his shapes in bigger and more powerful surf.

He obviously has some valid points, and his boards work well for certain surfers in certain waves.  Its tough breaking down preconceptions and fashion truisms in the surf industry, and getting a wide cross section of the board-buying populace to think (and buy!) outside their box.

Here's some pics of a board Mahana posted on Swaylocks 4 years ago...("This surf-skate is 5'2" x 3" x 19" and has been ridden in point and reef surf by a 220 lb rider.")  The thead: http://www2.swaylocks.com/node/1027407

thanks for the vid and link!

cool vid of the stand up lid. reading the comments it seems there is plenty of us ready for a new design to come out.

i liked the link you posted too. as i said originally props to those who actually have a stab at something new!

you must admit though tomos designs are standing out.

and to be humbly critical and not dismissive of the bing board it is just a slightly adjusted lid.

after a few hours thought im going ahead with my standard short board. the blanks outlined and…yeah, ive been missing a pintail for a while now.

ive been on modern twins for almost a year! that has to be the longest ive spent on a single design ever!

but i am taking an oath now that ill have a go at something like tomos things next.

id love to talk to the guy a bit but i suppose someone who has worked as hard as he must have actually creating an original product for production wouldnt be too keen on sharing his ideas and theory.

looking at the rail line and rocker on my twinny. i dont think ive too far to go…
