New EPS 9 footer

I finished up a 9 footer for my hellman rider, Colin Herlihy. I used Greg’s Resin Research resin on a Dan Foam 1-3/4 pound density blank with 2 1/8" basswoods glued an 1-1/8" apart. For the glassing, it has 2-6oz. top and bottom sample cloth from Graphite Master. Sanded finish, sprayed with Verithane Diamond coat clear sealer. 10-1/2" F.U. center box w/ FCS sides. I double sealer coated the blank with epoxy before glassing to prevent blows (had 2 tiny ones next to the stringer) Final weight 13-1/2 pounds, now to find out how he likes it? !

What is Dan Foam? Why not just use EPS and skip the two epoxy sealer coats? And another thing; what is and where to buy Verithane Diamond coat clear sealer? Thanks.

Questions, questions. Where will it all end?

Dan Foam is the Mfg. of the EPS blanks I use, a Carlsbad co.

I do a double sealer to prevent blows, I talked to Greg Loehr about this and he told me it is the blowing agent. My first attempts had serious blows from not sealing the blank, single coat, OK, but with 2 it works fine, just a little extra work for a better result. The Diamond Coat Verithane is from Homo depot, comes in flat, satin, gloss

Hey Jim,

Why did you choose the Varathane finish over urethane or the other clear coats out there?

I put the speed bead on the 6’4" today so it hot coat the bottom tomorrow. After I sand it out. I’m planning a few simple pinlines and a clear coat finish so I’m looking for the best stuff I can get. I’d like to brush it on it I can I’m really not in the spray booth mode.

Thanx, Rich

My jaw is still on the ground after checking that 6’ board from the

same foam. The thing weighed 1 lb. Or that’s what he said. It was like

an optical illusion - I saw the board in my hands but couldn’t feel the

weight. Amazing. Tough as nails too. Jim smacked it on the shaping

stands and nada dent. He doesn’t have that moniker for just any reason.

Now if I could only begin to describe the Soul Creation.

I’m intrigued with the sealer coat idea. I use Gregs epoxy too. How do you apply? Do you tape it? How much weight do you think it adds? With enough Add F, I can stretch 6 ozs without glass over a 9’6". Is that about the right amount per coat? thx

Yes

                                                                Thanks..... for ...

I built 25 of the old hollow paddle boards for the Gidget Co. to use for back drop display in their expo booth. I bought a gallon of the Varithane to spray the finish on them and liked the results, it is a little costly, about 55.00 a gallon, but dries quickly, is easy to scotch brite down before another coat and brings up a nice luster when scotch brited

for a 9 footer I mixed up 3 oz. per side, the second sealer didn’t use as much and with the additive F, it sands down really smooth. I taped the center line, but pulled the tape wet ( the epoxy penetrates the tape and bonds too well with whats behind it if left on til set up) and with a finger, I blend the edge seam. I found I needed a bit more resin than I initially thought I could get by with, not sure of the exact amount, but less than polyester

OK Blakestah, I bought a disposible digital camera and am taking pics of these projects, now you’ll all get sick of me bombarding you with more B.S.

Jim, outstanding! Bombard away.
