First time I saw an example of side fins, on a fin, was done by Alan Nelson of La Jolla, in 1956/57! Alan was, and still is, a creative and innovative thinker/designer. A true genius, in my opinion. Alan is little known outside the inner circle of early surfing pioneers. He was an influence on many of surfing's icons.
