new forum

Since Swaylocks is the only forum I read or participate in I’m a little lost on the details. For example what are all the icons and how do they get used, jumping, expanding? The pictures that are next to users names, can they be blown up? Also with the older forum I could see who responded to the posts without opening it. Thanks

edit also I cant figure out the order of the yellow document icons. thanks

there is a questions section on the cover page, and as soon as Doc gets here he will articulate the easy answer for you. :wink:

oh gawd… they told me, never volunteer …but, did I listen? Naaah…

This is a helluva powerful, versatile front end on this forum, unlike anything else I have seen elsewhere. For that matter, I spent good money for word processors with less zap and ease of use than this forum front end has.

In no particular order-

You can’t directly blow up the user icon-type pics in any way that I know of, and if you want to upload one for your own profile icon, please resize it to a small size both in dimensions and file size so Mike’s bandwidth doesn’t get all eaten up by peripheral stuff. If you want to see a bigger version of what somebody uses, ask and mebbe they’ll post a link to the big 'un.

The little plus-sign-in-a-circle guys next to posts are how you expand a thread. Click on one and see, the white ones and the green ones act a little differently. See the bottom of the General Discussion page on the left for more. You can also go to your Edit Profile setup and User Profile to change your view from ‘Flat’ to ‘Threaded’, which will give ya the way you were used to, I think. I’ve grown to like the flat view and the arrangement that takes me to the newest post that I haven’t read yet in a thread , just by clicking on the thread title.

Most recently replied to topics/threads are on the top of the heap.

ok, that’s enough to be going on with…

hope that’s of use

doc…

Thanks doc that clarified it quite a bit.

you asked about the yellow document icons…

If the first/top doc icon is yellow - you have not read the origional post

If the second/back icon is yellow - there are follow up post you have not read

If the cod icons are white - then you are up todate on that thread

Use your browser refresh/reload button to keep these doc icon color codings current.

(i.e. reading a thread then hitting the back key to return to the main discussion board does not update the icons)

This is a great way to scan the list to see if you are current on the threads you wish to watch.

Like Doc said the threads with the most recent activity are at the top so you only need to scan down to the first thread you are monitoring that has a white icon and you know that there are no threads below that point you have been reading that are more current than what you last saw.

enjoy

One other question on my end. How do you edit the Title in the user profile?

I know this is elementary so thanks for the help.

‘title’ as in yours is easternpacific and mine is doc ? You’re kinda stuck with that, unless Mike or one of the moderators, possibly, changes it for you. If you mean the user that’s currently on yours just under easternpacific and the journeyman that’s currently under mine, that comes in time, once you have hit a certain number of posts.

does that help, or answer the question?

doc.

Doc- my reference was to the user. I didn’t realize it had to do with number of posts. Thanks, again for taking the time to explain.

I hope I’m not over using the “tech support” feature.

We’ll have to find the Surftech “Doc” model. Just kidding!

How do I change my Newbie status?

Newbie, Enthusiast, Addict, Veteran and other forum statuses have nothing do do with a persons skydiving skills or abilities! Your status is automatically determined by the number of posts you’ve made to the forums. It is NOT etiquette to make frivolous and useless posts just to drive up your post numbers. Below are the different statuses that have been uncovered so far. There are more but we’ll wait till someone gets there!

0 => newbie

15 => user

50 => journeyman

100 => member

150 => enthusiast

300 => addict

500 => carp

800 => veteran

1000 => master

Thanks J.M.- I figured that out. I like the advanced editor w/ all the bells and whistles. One funny thing I stumbled on to is that SPELL CHECK does not know the word “Surfing”.

Keep the faith - and don’t moderate to hard.

Doesn’t know ‘surfing’?? See if it does now. I added it to my ‘custom’ dictionary, it may carry over for the whole forum.

doc…

Surfing has been added to my very own custom dictionary.
