I just got back home after being away for a while and found I have a mess of stuff waiting to be tinkered with. I have a couple of 6’2 PU shortboards snapped in half (my brother’s doing), a lot of EPS scraps from a past project, enough RR 2000 for a small board, and just barely enough fiberglass to make do with glassing something under the 5’5 range.
I’ve been debating making some handplanes with the eps scraps, or some kind of funky bellyboard with a shaped bottom/keel just for the hell of it, but what I’ll most likely do is try and join all of the foam I have and make some kind of finless unidentified gliding object.
Does anyone have any tips on gluing EPS to PU (in order to piece together a bigger blank) and then sealing with epoxy? will the difference in foam materials affect the epoxy curing and/or flexing later on? I’m asking for advice, but I’m pretty sure i’m just going to go ahead and make some kind of monstrosity just for the hell of it, and to practice glassing some more (I’d like to try my first resin tinting as well).
Any tips or comments would be appreciated on this one since I’m going out on a limb.
I have a pile of eps scraps myself. Was thinking about using the quick dry gorlia glue to bond them together. Otherwise I was told 3m or someone makes an addhessive that could work. I looked around a little but never found anything that was defitnatly polystryene safe.
the quick dry gorila glue is the white stuff... If you find something that bonds good and is easy to sand let me know thanks
oh yeah.. I was planning on recreating a block and then hotwire cut a blank out of it
my 1st go at joining bits of foam together was a beauty, read near disaster. I gathered up all these bits of offcuts from the factories at Brookvale, then me and my mate Ferret started to stick them together, even if we didn't nearly burn the house down, I cant imagine the look of the blank and I reckon we could get Brewer , Rusty and another few genius's and they wouldn't have been able to do a thing with it, so good luck, and your 1st resin tint too, Mate you are on fire, I love the optism, cheers H.
yeah, gorilla glue is what i’ve been reading in the archives. glad to hear you guys are doing the same thing. hopefully i’ll get started this weekend and i’ll try and put up pictures if they’re worth it.
another question for those out there…
i snapped the nose of my first shape the other morning and id like to repair it. the board is PU with standard polyester resin. can i sand the heck out of the fiberglass around the break and use my extra RR 2000 epoxy to patch the board? i don’t have polyester so i’m really trying to make it work.
I know for sure you can use epoxy resins on PU foam.. I use eps foam and resin research KK for lam and hot coat then polyester for a gloss coat, so having the combination of the 2 resins on the board should be fine.. Other than than i have never repaired a snaped off section on a board. hope that answered your question.
