New Smyrna Inlet Is In Trouble

I know I have posted something about this a while back but things mellowed out. The jetty extension project lost steam, they didn’t have any money. Everyone forgot about it. Now all of a sudden, not only do they have the money, they have an approved proposal by the Army Corp of Engineers that would extended the jetty 1000’ out and hook south, thereby cutting off about 70% of the prime surfing area. WTF!!! Here is a pic of the proposed “Dog Leg South”:

The New Smyrna Beach Inlet is one of the most consistent waves in Florida (some would save the whole eastern sea board - but I’m not going there - if this was happening in NJ - NY - VA etc. I would still be pissed off).

If you could go on-line and sign the petition and/or email the representatives on the left hand side of the page, I would appreciate it (they have an email all button - really easy).

Here is the link to the web site with the links to the petition and and big wig emails.

Here’s my email to the big wigs- use it for inspiration - or something:

When considering the best course of action pertaining to the New Smyrna Inlet jetty extension, please consider ALL of those who look upon this area as valued resource. The purposed “Dog Leg South” jetty extension project will have a huge negative impact on the surfing population. A group of citizens not only made up of residents of New Smyrna beach but of all those from around the state and beyond who consider the New Smyrna Inlet to be one of the most consistent waves on the entire east coast of the United States.

The purposed “Dog Leg South” jetty extension project will effectively cut off approximately 70% of the prime surfing area at the inlet. In its current state the “Dog Leg South” jetty extension project would be a tragedy to not only the surfers who enjoy this precious resource but to the surrounding businesses who benefit from out of town visitors who also enjoy our inlet.

I realize that something must be done. That boats need to get in and out of the inlet safely and beach erosion issues are major concerns. However to be short sighted on the over all value of this area to the community would be a tragedy.

Thank you for your consideration,

Michael Duncan

Sorry for the rant, but I’m pissed.
